so start of the new season coming up, finally, so thought it was time for a new one. the last one i posted in is long gone and don't know if it was ever replaced.
oh, i nearly called it the premiership thread, but then realised how much that would upset daniel, so i changed it :)

You could have been playing us this season if it wasn't for Birmingham and Reading being so hopeless :(
Predictions:
Stoke & Hull to be relegated, both doing better then Derby last season. Hull will probably get a win over Liverpool at Anfield, god bless inconsistency.
Wigan, Fulham Middlesborough, Sunderland yada yada to be down there as well.
Top 4 will be the same as always, Spurs, Man City, Pompey and West Ham to be up there as well.
===
Championship wise I think the best we can hope for is mid-table, maybe a late playoff push. I just can't see how bringing through so many of our youngsters is going to work for us.
Maybe if we bring back Clive Woodward we might do better...

Well, this season should be pretty good. Most of the top half teams will be spending big. We have signs of that with the £9m signing of Crouch by my team, Portsmouth, and Spurs spending big bucks on Gomez, Dos Santos and Modric. The rumour of Ronaldinho to Man City is an odd one. Clearly its all about money, but I really can't see the appeal of a fat, lazy, unfit, slow, past it brazilian who would cost them over £10m a season on wages!! That's insane!!
I fancy Pompeys chance of getting a top 6 spot this season, but would be happy with a decent cup run and top half finish.
Team for next season:
James
Johnson - Campbell - Distin - Hreidarrson
SWP - Diarra - Muntari - Kranjcar
Crouch - Defoe
Subs:
Ashdown
Pamarot
Primus
Diop
Little
Nugent
Utaka

I'll sadly own up to being glad he was back, if only for the fact he was so shrewd/tight with the finances which is what we really need at the moment. Can't say I'm glad to see him continually speaking about our new signings or his bright idea of trying to make us the Ajax of England.
He doesn't seem to realise it already exists, good old Crewe Alexandra...

Being a Newcastle fan I'm expecting the same old shit from us like last season. Good start but will end in disaster halfway through the season. I'd say 12th spot again unless we start buying some good players soon and getting rid of the excess shit we have in our squad.

Rumours are Pablo Aimar will sign within the next couple of days.
As long as you have Joey Barton on your books I hope you get nowhere. Nasty little bastard he is.

Sunderland... nyeah, we'll scrape by as usual - showed we were good enough last season to avoid the drop. Unless we can get some new signings in, Keano's got it all to do again.
Hull to go down for sure. I live half an hour away. It's a shit hole.

I'm hoping that Leeds don't cock it up and actually get promoted this season. Without wanting to quote LP... we really did get so far and it didn't even matter in the end. Oh dear haha. Yes, without the point deduction we'd have been promoted but we should've got the deduction, just not the whole fifteen points. Oh, and it doesn't help that a dirty Chelsea fan owns us.

Oh and the whole speculation over Arshavin and whether or not he's gonna be playing in the Premier League should end too. He's not that good a player. He had one good game in Euro 2008 and apart from that I don't think he's a great player. There's far better.

agreed. ronaldo more so because he is the main culprit, not commiting or anything. at least barry has made it clear he wants out, its liverpool who are stalling on that end of the deal.

I think Villa don't want to sell Barry to Liverpool for some reason. The Ronaldo saga is very annoying. If he wants to go then let him go. United are better off without him. Do a swap deal with Madrid and get Sjneider (sp?)

They'll be nothing without Ronaldo if he should leave. There's no real proven goal scorer on that team as last season showed. Rooney and Tevez might get you a couple but it was Ronaldo who was racking them up. If he goes Ferguson might have to think of a different tactic instead of his usual "everybody pass to Ronaldo" technique. :)
We should get a fantasy football thing going on here.

Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabricio Coloccini's agent has claimed his client has been offered a move to Newcastle.
Kevin Keegan is known to be in the market for defensive reinforcements, having at the weekend spoken of a need to add cover in both full-back positions.
Argentine international Coloccini prefers to operate as a central defender but according to his agent, Macelo Lombilla, Keegan is still keen.
Lombilla claims he has discussed Newcastle's approach with Deportivo president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro, but has yet to reveal the outcome of the discourse.
A fee of £8million has been mooted and while such a figure may prove prohibitive, the fact Coloccini has been left out of Depor's pre-season tour of Venezuela does add weight to any exit talk.
"The only offer that I have received is from Newcastle, which I communicated to Deportivo," Coloccini told AS.

Plenty of excuses, young team, far to many injuries (fitness guys need sacking! same thing each year).
So is there any AFL supporters on here or am I the only one?
Sounds sort of like Sunderland. We're shit, and always near the bottom. It's more interesting that way ;)

next season will be such an entertaining season as all the teams in the prem are a lot more evened out in ability, being a man utd fan though i have to concede that chelsea have a big chance of doing well, their players are physically dominant to the other teams, but with physical teams, entertaining football is sacrficed.

I still think it'll be the same teams down at the bottom with the exception of maybe Fulham if they wrap up their deal with Andy Johnson. I fail to see how ronaldo is going anywhere, seeing as he is under contract until 2012, is currently injured and consequently out for up to 8 weeks (which would mean he would fail any medical before mid September) and also the kind of money his transfer would command is simply not an option for Real. They simply couldn't afford to pay £70m plus for one player.

Very good result as I fancy Ipswich to have a decent-ish season. We (Southampton fan) lost to Cardiff 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal. Sounded like we played pretty well though which is a good sign considering we're trying for some Dutch revolution thing right now.

Well done to your lot Chris, I hate Stoke.
North End are joint top after a 2-0 win against Palace. Goals from Nicholson and Chaplow. We played extremely well and passed the ball around fluidly I thought-a huge improvement on last season's home form. There was a short period in the second half when I thought Palace were going to get the better of us but we were clearly determined to hold on to the lead. Today was a spceial day at Deepdale, our ground is now finally complete! Below is a picture of the new Invincibles Pavilion Stand.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Preston North End
I think North End battled hard for this point today, and it was well deserved. Wednesday bossed the first half, and even though we had a goal disallowed (the first of many mistakes from the ref IMO) they took the lead in the first fifteen minutes. Maybe this is slightly over-critical, but I wouldn't have been surprised if Wednesday had scored again before half-time, and I think we needed the break to settle ourselves down.
In the second half an inspired substitution, Ross Wallace was influential in providing an apparently brilliant cross (so the radio said, I've yet to see the highlights) to Chris Sedgwick who picked out Richard Chaplow, who netted the equaliser and his second of the season.
For the final 15 minutes of the game it was end-to-end stuff, with both sides looking for a winner. We could have snatched it right at the death but Youl Mawene's header went just wide.
Overall a satisfying away point that I'm more than happy with. It leaves us 4th in the table.
I know it means nothing yet, but I'm chuffed to see Liverpool at the top of the Prem, especially as I have Carragher and Gerrard in my fantasy team :D

Carling Cup Round Two; Preston North End 0-1 D*rby C*unty
I only hope there's a method in Alan Irvine's madness, because we were really poor last night. Carter and Hawley were just ineffectual; Simon Whaley should have played from the start based on his determined second half performance. D*rby didn't really deserve the win, it was a well taken goal that came basically out of nothing. But I fear even if North End had played all night we'd never have scored. I'll be gutted if D*rby get Liverpool in the third round though. But to be honest I'd rather have three points on Saturday than a win last night.
Well done to Northampton Town! Chris, you must be gutted! :p

Preston North End 2-1 Charlton Athletic
Oh.My.God. I don't think I've seen North End play so well in years. Charlton went ahead in the first half through a soft penalty (watch the highlights and tell me I'm wrong ;) ) but where you would have seen the North End side of last season completely collapse, we did the exact opposite, dug our heels in and towards the end of the first half looked like we were about to stick it in the net.
Steady pressure in the second half was rewarded when Neil Mellor stuck the ball in the net in the 58th minute; and it just got better from there on in, we looked calm and composed and had a few good spells just holding on to the ball and passing it around. Barry Nicholson netted the second on a day when we could easily have had a hatful.
There just looks to be so much more belief and determination within the side this season.
I know we're only a month in, but compare this start with last season and I'm sure you can forgive me for being chuffed to little buttons that we're joint top :D
We've also signed striker Jon Parkin from Stoke this morning; got him on loan so he could play today and he impressed :D will be finalising a 3 year deal on Monday. In a way I can't wait to see the transfer window shut so we can all just get on with playing. Rumours are doing my head in. Even David Nugent was spotted at Deepdale today...
*sings* eieieio, up the Football League we go... :D

Good start for you so far, have you changed the squad about much since last season? Sure you were down in the lower half of the table with us for most of the season!
===
Typical result for Saints, beat Derby at Pride Park last weekend, beat a normal/full strength Birmingham side mid-week in the Carling Cup and then lose at home and play woefully against Blackpool
Hoping we'll clear a few players out before the window closes tonight, not looking that likely though. We did sign some French nipper on loan, another midfielder, but nothing major so far.

We've made some changes, but not really as far as goes signings. We've had a lot of players come back from injuries and I think the squad is a lot more settled together than it was last season. I do think that Alan Irvine's coaching experience in the Prem has done the squad the world of good.
On the transfer front we signed Steven Elliot from Wolves with Matt Hill going the other way, and also crossed the t's and dotted the i's on Jon Parkin's contract.

Hey I'm sorry I don't mean to interrupt and this might be quite a naive question but I just thought I'll ask anyway. When clubs say that they'll mail you an autographed shirt of whichever member's if you request for one, is there a possibility of say, at least 30% in that if I live all the way in SEA?

Whilst I would love nothing more than to see a change within the "top four" as it were, I have to agree with Rinaldi, this could easily spell the beginning of the end for the game that I grew up and fell in love with. And that's me speaking as a fan of a Championship team...

I'll echo most of the thoughts here so far. There can only really be two outcomes...
The potential "Big 5" breaking away into a Euro Super League in a few seasons.
Or the more likely scenario...
The moneybags teams "Big 5", Aston Villa, Spurs, Tottenham, Newcastle and a few others trying to form a new Premier League. Fewer games which they'll all love to try and focus on the European competitions, more lucrative TV deal's as they'd consider every game as being TV worthy. I guess you could even get to the point where each game is televised considering it might be 5-6 games a weekend.

After yet another dissapointing performance in miserable conditions, I'm hoping that the game tommorow in Chicago can see the US play up to its' potential. That said, I really shouldn't get my hopes up with this "veteran" line up that Bradley will be employing. Sad part is is that because he wins, albiet ugly and totally unconvincing, he won't be questioned.

It's been scheduled for the 21st of Sept. Both teams are playing CL matches that week, so it should be an interesting one. Especially with Essien out for Chelsea and Ronaldo not ready to return until mid October. I'll be interested to see what teams both sides put out. Chelsea have the easier of the CL ties so may field a weakened team against Bordeaux and rest some big name players for Sundays match.
Hopefully Chelsea get a couple of injuries so we can beat them in the Carling Cup the following Wednesday.

I've been working a lot of overtime and slept through most of the radio commentary, but obviously I missed very little, although we apparently hit the crossbar in the first half. From reading the match report it sounds like we were the more likely team to score, however I'm very pleased with another away point that continues our unbeaten league run. Two tough games coming up, Notts Forest and Wolves, luckily they're both at home. We are 3rd in the table.
In other news... it's incredible that Hull beat Newcastle today, I still do have a strong feeling that Hull will stay up. And HURRAH! Liverpool beat ManYoo :D

Preston North End 2-1 Nottingham Forest
The first of two tough games in a week, in which we had a slow start, but quickly got into our stride and by the second half were completely dominating the game. Try and get to see the footage of the goals, Youl Mawene's in particular was an absolute peach. Neil Mellor got the other before they pulled a flukey one back, which led to a tense finish, although where we might have fallen at the last hurdle last season, this time we held on for all three points at home. We are in third position, two points behind the leaders, and four points clear of fourth. Yes I know it's still early, but I'm enjoying it while it's good...
I'm also pretty chuffed because we now have our clock back, and also a big screen at Deepdale. It finally looks like a proper modern football ground.
Bring on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday-yes that's right folks, it's the Championship top-of-the-table clash at Deepdale :D

that was a clean challenge .....
It wasn't a clean challenge. The only reason he got off was because the charge was 'serious foul play', which it wasn't. It was still a professional foul and a yellow card. Jo would have scored. No way would Carvalho have gotten back.
Seeing as a red card cannot be downgraded to a yellow, the red card should have stood as it was a foul.
Just another example of the FA's weak approach to the big four.

Preston North End 1-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Hmm. I'm wondering why on earth Kate (Melian) and Lynne (Lynford) have decided they want to return to Deepdale, because I was embarrased for us yesterday.
All credit to Wolves, they were without a doubt the better side, and if they carry on like that for the rest of the season they will no doubt be promoted. Chris Iwelumo's first goal was a peach of an overhead kick from an almost impossible angle. He scored a hat trick, only to be sent off for a "clash of heads" with Sean St. Ledger, who admitted post-match that it was a complete accident, and hopes the card can be rescinded. Mick McCarthy was also sent to the stands for the second half, after applauding the referee at half time. That I have no problem with, but doing it in full view of angry home supporters smacks of a slightly unprofessional attitude.
We won a penalty with literally the last kick of the game, and Wolves' keeper was also sent off. Neil Mellor smacked it in.
If North End are to mount a proper challenge this season, and I mean proper, not just messing about in the top half of the table, then we need to quickly grow some balls and stop being so "nice". We led down and let Wolves play to a certain extent yesterday, and ultimately that is where the gap between Championship and Premiership standard begins to open up.
Finally, Preston keeper Andrew Longergan got the man of the match award. God knows why. Personally I'd have given it to Mellor, not because he scored the penalty, but because at times he seemed to be the only one playing with any will to win the ball and go for goal.
Rant over. Bring on Burnley next weekend.

B*rnl*y 3-1 Preston North End
It's always embarrassing to lose a derby game, even more so when you know your side just didn't perform well enough. I'm not going to bore everyone to death and waffle on like I did last week, mainly because I'm still on a downer from the whole thing. What I will say is this. With a performance much similar to last week's display against Wolves, against a side who are only just beginning to show form this season, North End are now back down to earth with a bump after being on a very premature high so early in the season. It's obvious now we have a long way to go to mount a proper promotion challenge this season, and the sooner we realise we're going to have to work much harder to achieve that, the better. We need to play with a lot more determination and conviction , and just try to create more of a presence on the pitch, especially in the forward line. I'm just glad we get a chance for a quick comeback on Tuesday night against Swansea.
The only thing to brighten my day yesterday was Liverpool winning the Merseyside derby.
