View Full Version : The Book Discussion Thread.

Pretty much a book version of the Movie Discussion Thread. Talk about the last book you read, or the book you're currently reading. A bit about it, if it's any good. That kind of stuff. If you want to talk about something that may spoil the book for those that haven't read it, please make it so it has to be highlighted.

At the moment, I'm reading Stephen King's "The Shining". I've barely put it down, if I'm being honest, which is reasonably unusual for me. Personally I think it's written very well, and it's nice to read the little details that the movie excludes. And I finally understand the whole "here's Johnny" thing. :P

I looked for this thread, but couldn't find one. If this happens to be a duplicate, then feel free to let me know.

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. A non-fiction book about identifying bad shit about to happen. Pretty interesting read.

I agree, reading is a great way to escape.
Oh, is it that hard to get a hold of it where you are? So far I'm really enjoying it, it's a really good read in my opinion.

I haven't heard of that one, what's it about? :)

kinda. books are a bit expencive where i live. i mostly get to borrow them and, unfortunatly, Stephen King's works are not for sale :p and my school library is in the dumps so don't ask.
i sooo wanna read that book!

well, so far it's interesting :) it's about a detective by the name of John Stefanovich who is out to get a drug dealer (who also poses as a wealthy businessman and the leader of the Midnight Club) and stop him. only that this drug dealer was killed by someone else... someone John is not aware of.
so it's up to him, a cop and a journalist to crack the code of the Midnight Club and the mysterious killer. O_o

bah, my explanation sucks

Books can be pretty expensive here. Have you thought of trying eBay? You might be able to get a second hand copy from there, and it really shouldn't cost that much.

It sounds pretty interesting, and your explaination wasn't bad. I might look into that one at some point. :P

Oh he is? That's a shame. Well hopefully you'll find it at some point. :]

His name rings a bell, but I can't think of anything else he's written. My mum might have some books by him, she used to read a lot. I'll have to ask her later. Who are your other favourite fiction writers?

maybe your mum might have his books then.
i am a fan of very limited fiction writers though :p once i start with one writer's work i have to finish the entire series written by that person.
anyway, here's mine-

Agatha Christie
R.L.Stine (during my younger years)
Stephen King
James Patterson
Dan Brown
Mary Higgins Clark

that's all i could think of atm. how about you?

That's a longer list than mine, I haven't been much of a reader until recently. :P
I used to love R.L. Stine when I was younger, I still have a heap of Goosebumps books buried away somewhere haha

I'd have to say Stephen King, and Nick Hornby for "High Fidelity". Also, Koushun Takami, who wrote the Battle Royale novel - that was brilliant. I've just realised that most the things I've read have been turned into movies.. Oops. :P

R.L.Stine will always be on my list of top writers. his works are the ones that got my into reading and the horror/fiction side.
and i forgot to add the classic J.K.Rowling, Christopher Paolini and C.S.Lewis as well.

and High Fidelity was actually a book? O_o wasn't that a movie as well? correct me if im wrong.

Yeah, I remember his stories being brilliant when I read them. Don't think I'd have the same view now though haha.
I'm not fond of Harry Potter. I don't want to like it.. so I refuse to read it. :P I am asuming that's all J.K.Rowling has written?

I loved High Fidelity, absolutely and completely. It said so many things that made so much sense to me, and it too was well written in my opinion. And yes, it was a film. A very bloody good film. hehe
Koushun Takami.. well, I don't know anything other than Battle Royale by him. I don't know if anything else by him has been translated into English, but if it has I would like to read it. Battle Royale I thoroughly enjoyed reading though, and could read it again and again.

yeah, Harry Potter is all she has written, lol. i read the first book and got sucked into it, so i had to finish all 7 books. but since you don't like them i'll stop my comments on them :p

i never got around to watching High Fidelity, or reading it. and since that author is not quite known i'd be having a hard time tracking down his book. i'll go rent the movie instead.

I'm hoping to, I enjoy reading.. but I tend to have a short attention span. I've got half way into a few books, and then just forgotten I was reading them for some reason. And I'm a slow read, so they take me a while to get through.
It's 7 now? Wow, that's a lot. But I don't want to get started on that, I have very bad views of J.K.Rowling, so yes, let's move on. :P

You should watch it, I'm not going to insist that you'll love it because it might not be your thing. But it's one of my all-time favourite films.
No, no. Battle Royale is fiction. It's about a fictional law created in Japan to cope with over-population and mass unemployment. "The B.R. Act". Once a year, as a part of this Act, a class from a randomly selected Japanese school are taken against their will to an island where they are told that they have to kill each other off until only one remains.

LMAO, same here :D i tend to lose my concentration if the start of the book is boring, which leads to me taking a couple of weeks to finish a thick 200+ page book. but of course, when your done with it we'll all feel like reading it once again, right? ;)
yeah, it IS quite a lot, considering some of those books are really thick. hehe.

i'll try checking out the nearest rental DVD store for that movie. they should have it, coz i remember seeing the poster of that movie somehwere.
Battle Royale sounds awsome! just the kind of book i enjoy reading. i'll have to hunt a lot to find such a book written by that author though. Japanese (am i right?) writers arn't that famous over here, im afraid.

I am really sorry some of you guys can't get books easily, but if you keep searching I am sure you will find all the ones you want. Stephen King is also one of my favourites! At the moment I am reading a lot of sci-fi and fantasy books - The latest is one called Winterbirth by Brian Ruckley. nice thread Ash.Well done.
I love reading books, but school is taking over me.
Last book i read, which was finished not so long ago, about a week or so,is a book we're doing at school,Unfortunatly.

It is Called Montana 1948.This book started out as a boring book but the last about say..20 pages? changed my mind. It's an okay book, nothing special.
But not a good book to do at school. It's too disturbing,it's about this younge man that grows up in a little country town.It talks about things like, what he thought about seeing his baby sitter naked and such, this is why i thought it was disturbing to read at school. The last pages were of him all old and married, which seemed okay as the way he thought about his life kind of changed, which was written in a clever way, pitty the good bits were at the end making it a rather bad book.
3/10

One of the books i read before that was memorise of a geisha, which i read in my own language,Arabic.i thught it was just well written and full of exciting events.

Yeah, books do tend to be much better than the movies adapted from them. It sounds like I'll love that one, since I loved the movie. :o

true that.Books just go behind the story better, they have more details, and you read them and swallolw events differently. Most movies with books start out with the book's inspiration behind them.
I guess you will like it if you liked the movie, you might end up not liking the movie cus the book is too good, for me at least.

Yeah, definitely. They describe things and bring out emotion and reaction like a movie adaptation couldn't.
I doubt I'll hate the movie when I've read the book, the movie is one that I watch a lot because it's that good, in my opinion of course. :P

I strongly recommend books by Chuck Palahniuk such as 'Diary', 'Lullaby', 'Choke', 'Fight Club', 'Invisible Monsters' and 'Survivor'.

I just bought 'Rant' today, yet to read it, but it sounds very good. My favourite at the moment is 'Invisible Monsters'.

She's a catwalk model who has everything: a boyfriend, a career, a loyal best friend. But when a sudden motor 'accident' leaves her disfigured and incapable of speech, she goes from being the beautiful centre of attention to being an invisible monster, so hideous that no one will acknowledge she exists.

Enter Brandy Alexander, Queen Supreme, one operation away from being a real woman, who will teach her that reinventing yourself means erasing your past and making up something better, and that salvation hides in the last place you'll ever want to look.

The narrator must exact revenge upon Evie, her best friend and fellow model; kidnap Manus, her two-timing ex-boyfriend; and hit the road with Brandy in search of a brand-new past, present and future.

Tickled your fancy?

Just started "My Sisters Keeper" by Jodi Picoult. It's about a 13 year old girl who was made to be a genetic match to her sister so that she could cure her sisters lukemia but hires a lawyer to sue her parents for the rights over her own body. I'll let you know how it turns out but so far I'm enjoying it.

I'm waiting on the last book of the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series to be published. It's ~40 years after Return of the Jedi, the New Republic has become too bureacratic so Jacen Solo (Han and Leia's son) decides to become a Sith in order to bring forth peace. All the original characters are still alive but just a bit older obviously. :p

I've also been reading James Rollins' books. I am currently reading The Judas Strain. It is about an ancient deadly bacteria first discovered by Marco Polo on his way home from China. Switch to modern day and a terrorist group is trying to cultivate it as a superweapon and Sigma (secret US Govt agency) must stop them!

Stephen King is always good. Pet Semetary is probably my favorite of his.

I think IT is the creepiest of King. And the fact that he is chasing little kids and you are reading it from a terrified little kid's viewpoint, makes it all the more creepy.

Joe Donnelly is fantastic, very underrated author. Shrike was brilliant, so was Stone.

Another 'creepy' one I will throw in is an old novel called The Dark by James Herbert. Another brilliant author and a book I really adored in a strictly 'horror' sense.

I LOVE Stephen King... he is one of my favourits authors... Shining was the 1st of his book I read, if u liked it u should try also "Carrie", "Insomnia", "Pet Sematary", "It","The Green Mile","Cell","The Dark Half"... I love his way of writing... now I'm reading Kafka's "Die Verwandlung" I think the english title should be the metamorphosis but I don't know... sorry. The main character is a man that one day, waking up, see he has become a huge beatle. His 1st reaction isn't of scream, but he is more worried for how to go to work with that look and also because he was in late. He can't hide his situation to his family, but they are scared an discusting by him, only his sister brings him the food. I haven't ended it yet... but I think it's a metaphor to talk of emargination, omologation of mind and scream of what's different... Sorry, it's a very good book but my enaglish sucks and I wasn't able to show u well its beauty...

It's worth a look definitely. Bit graphic in some places and it really is written quite strangely. I believe it has a poem, character monologue/historical tale about themselves and then something current in each chapter.

I purchased Invisible Monsters recently and finished that quite quickly, pretty good and with quite a few unexpected twists along the way. Got a bit stupid in the end though with how things kept working out.

I'm halfway finished with The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger.

It's a pretty cool book, cause the author uses informal writing and curses a lot in the book and nothing really happens (at least until the part I've reached).

So it's kind of like our life-a little ironic and not so dramatic at times.

The symbolisms are pretty cool too, but there were a lot of it, so I'm guessing that I just got 1/3 of it, or even less.

omg, there's a book thread??

Paulo Coelho is one of my faves!
Alchemist, Veronica Decided To Die (sorry if i'm messing up the titles, i only get to read in Croatian), On the Bank of the Piedra River I Sat And Cried... read his autobiography as well, it's interesting^^

Poe, anyone? Wilde? Lovecraft?

Stephen King rocks! anyone read It? Cell (a wierd sub-concious virus transmitted via cellphones)? oh, and the one with the writer and his fetus in fetu twin... isn't it cool how it all somehow spins around Derry?
i find movie adaptations of King's books (almost) the only movies made by a book that don't actually suck.

i've recently watched a movie by a Stephen King's book, but don't know the title :( and i know it's King's cuz it's on an island near Derry^^ about this mr. Linoge who comes to the island during an awful storm and causes some nasty super-freaky 5hit :D
does anybody have a clue?

my current reading is The Marquis de Sade: A Life by Neil Schaeffer. interesting.

a must-read: Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery (sorry if i mispelled the name)

that's the Shinning i think. if you read back some posts in the thread, especially Ash's one (she's the thread starter), you'll get to know some more of it and stuff.

i never really read the Little Prince but i've heard a lot about it, and i thought that you should read it first as a kid. cause what interested me at first was the story, i found it magical and pretty cute and stuff. but then you grow up and learn that it has a lot of meanings and stuff. so i don't know if i should read it now. i think it's the kind of book that you read as a kid only to read again as an adult so you can fully understand what it's about.

no, haven't heard of him. what kind of stuff does he write?
fantasy-fiction. he wrote the scenario for the movie Stardust (which was adapted from a novel he wrote), there's a new movie (dunno if it's by him, but it's his story) called Coraline that's going out soon enough (it's animated and looks like the nightmare before xmas and stuff). he wrote a lot of novels and some comics, too. there's a whole series of comic book he wrote called The Sandman, and another one called Death. here's a couple of novels he wrote: Neverwhere, American Gods, Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book (more recently), Good Omens (written with Terry Pratchett), and a whole other lot. he also wrote short stories, published in two (that i know of) collection: one called Smoke and Mirrors, the other called Fragile things.

and seriously, i recommend ALL of the things he wrote. he's just really that awesome. if you like comics, though, i really suggests you start by reading The Sandman. it's an amazing piece of litterature.

i bought Good Omens but still haven't read it yet lol. my friend still has it.

neverwhere is REALLY excellent, but i suggest you read the book before reading the comic, it's really different.

the graveyard book was pretty inventive and it's a good recollection of myths and legends, i really liked it.

if not, i read a lot of other things by him: i read Neverwhere, i read Smoke and Mirrors, i read Stardust, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Fragile Things, American Gods, Anansi Boys, the whole The Sandman series, Death: The High Cost of Living and Death: The Time of Your Life. and i think that's all, if i'm not mistaken. he's my favorite author, really. i love his work.

you know, i have to agree with that. the twilight series surely isnt as popular as it is because of the great writing. BUT, its a great escape. i really enjoyed the books, but especially the first one was written pretty....sub-standard... still a fun read tho.

i love Anne Rice's Exit To Paradise, it's soooo romantic... and involves SM :D

that does sound interesting. i've read pretty much all her vampire books, but i dont think ive heard of that one. might have to look into it.

I really love Patricia Cornwell. Her main character, Kay Scarpetta, is amazing. I've read everything she's written. She has a new book out, but I'm waiting for it to be released in paperback before I buy it. She writes great forensic/crime stuff.
My hubby picked me up a few of Ann Rice's novels, after I read the Twilight series and told him it was about vampires. I still haven't read any of them yet. I keep meaning to, and as soon as I sit down to read them, something always comes up.

which ones? my favs are blood and gold and pandora. well and the vampire lestat & the queen of the damned. the movie doesnt do them justice. i used to love interview with a vampire but i read it too many times when i was younger. it is the only anne rice book i have never read in english.

i've never read Anne Rice in English! lucky you
so far, i've read only armand and pandora.
exit to paradise was made into a movie. never saw it, but heard it's pretty watered down.
she has other novels too, i read this one called (i think) the violin, about this ghost violin player and a woman whose husband just died of HIV.
Rice also wrote this trilogy about Sleeping Beauty, only in her version, Beauty gets woken up by being deflowered, then she's shipped out into this castle where she's educated to be an SM slave o.O

has anyone had the luck to find any books from marquise de Sade? i don't think i'll ever find him in a library :(

fantasy-fiction. he wrote the scenario for the movie Stardust (which was adapted from a novel he wrote), there's a new movie (dunno if it's by him, but it's his story) called Coraline that's going out soon enough (it's animated and looks like the nightmare before xmas and stuff). he wrote a lot of novels and some comics, too. there's a whole series of comic book he wrote called The Sandman, and another one called Death. here's a couple of novels he wrote: Neverwhere, American Gods, Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book (more recently), Good Omens (written with Terry Pratchett), and a whole other lot. he also wrote short stories, published in two (that i know of) collection: one called Smoke and Mirrors, the other called Fragile things.

and seriously, i recommend ALL of the things he wrote. he's just really that awesome. if you like comics, though, i really suggests you start by reading The Sandman. it's an amazing piece of litterature.

great, thanks for the list. I'll take a note and check it out sometime (I still have about 15 books to read, which I've already bought).
I've seen the trailer for Coraline ... looked pretty cool =)

ive read the first chapter of the violin in one of her other books (you know they usually add a little teaser at the end) but it seemed boring. wow, those sleeping beautly tales sound interesting, i might have to look into them. also, the vampire armand is pretty good! one i wouldnt recommend so much is vittorio the vampire, its just kinda lame and has little to do with the rest of the series. and i hated the books in whihc she tried to mix the vampires with the witches (merrick and blood....something..cant remember the name)

I'm not even sure which Ann Rice novels he got, but I know they weren't from the vampire series.
Bia, can you recommend the best of her vampire novels? Or at least one to start with? Thanks!

call it... reader's curiosity.
the more notorious a book is (by something good or something bad), the more i want to read it.
i have an appetite for the extremes in the imagination :D

the violin is kinda mellow compared to the usual blood and dangerous attractions to the unknown Rice writes, but still pretty deep. unfortunately, my library only has four books from her, exit to paradise, violin, the interview, armand and pandora. i hate 'reading' e-books cuz a book is meant to be a book, but, considering my situation, i'll just might have to resort to that :(

why, oh why did Rice had to go catholic? now that she's dennounced writing, no good vamp books are being written :(
only cheesy love novels like twilight =((

well, interview with a vampire is a good one to start with since its the first. however if you've seen the movie you can skip it and go straight to "the vampire lestat" and "the queen of the damned" those 2 have to be read together unless of course you enjoy reading half a story....

and like i said, "blood and gold" is a great one (must read lestat and QOTD first tho, or you wont unerstand everything) uummm...
the vampire armand of course (ties right in with the other one, tho i dont recall if they need to be in any sort of order, its been a while since ive read them)
pandora is great (again connected with blood and gold, which is the story of marius, whom you will "meet" in "the vampire lestat")
i could go on all day... if i didnt have piles and piles of books i wanna read ATM, i would re-read the vampire series. they are that good.

btw, im reading "odd hours" by dean koontz right now. i guess theres a whole bunch of books about this guy and this is supposed to be the worst, so i thought i'd start with that one so my expectations wouldnt be too high. anyone heard of him or read anything by him?

nopes, sorry I_B_Long.
and yea, i heard of Nietzcshe. poor guy. spent his whole life saying one thing, then, near his end, went bananas, dennounced 'the thing' and died in madness and despair.

I started to read this book, but I don't even finished. The owner got back LOL.
So, I'm reading Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club. I've just started, but I'm thinking that is so similar to the movie.

Pretty much a book version of the Movie Discussion Thread. Talk about the last book you read, or the book you're currently reading. A bit about it, if it's any good. That kind of stuff. If you want to talk about something that may spoil the book for those that haven't read it, please make it so it has to be highlighted.

I looked for this thread, but couldn't find one. If this happens to be a duplicate, then feel free to let me know.

I LOVE to read! My favorite authors are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Patterson and Stephenie Meyer. I have only read the Twilight Saga by S.M. I tried to read The Host and after a few chapters, I couldn't get into it.

The last book I read is called 'Say Goodbye' it was by Lisa.. I forgot her last name. It was really good.
