Layne Staley, Alice In Chains Singer, Dead At 34
Influential vocalist's struggle with drugs was key component of band's music.
By Joe D'Angelo and Robert Mancini
Alice in Chains' Layne Staley was found dead in his Seattle home on Friday evening.
The King County Medical Examiner positively identified Staley's body on Saturday (April 20), following an autopsy. Exact time and cause of death are pending, as laboratory results could take several weeks, a spokesperson said. Staley was 34.
Police responded to a call to check on Staley's well-being that was placed by a family member who claimed to have not spoken to Staley for two weeks. They arrived at Staley's address with the family member in Seattle's University District at 5:41 p.m. PT on Friday, according to the police report. Upon discovering his body on the couch surrounded by intravenous drug paraphernalia, according to the Associated Press, officers called investigators from the medical examiner's office, who arrived on the scene at approximately 7:30-8:00 p.m., a spokesperson said. Authorities said he'd been dead for several days, so the body wasn't immediately identifiable as that of Staley, whose longtime battle with drug dependency was a central component of his band's music — a dark and bombastic sound that continues to influence artists some 15 years after the group first formed.
With Staley as their scowling, tortured frontman, Alice in Chains claimed a spot as the darkest and hardest band of the early '90s grunge movement, bringing a healthy dose of metal to the new movement. Born in Kirkland, Washington, in 1967, Staley formed Alice in Chains while still a high school student in the mid-'80s. The singer soon formed a friendship with guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who joined the band in 1987 and provided the other half of the group's creative core. Drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr (replaced in 1992 by Mike Inez) soon followed, and the band landed a deal with Columbia Records in 1989.
The band's 1990 debut, Facelift, found a home at both college rock and classic rock radio outlets, chiefly on the strength of the single "Man in the Box." The album soon went gold, and the band followed it with an appearance on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's Seattle love letter, "Singles." With anticipation high, the band delivered Dirt in 1992, pushing AIC to triple platinum status with caustic tracks such as "Angry Chair," "Rooster" and "Them Bones." A prime spot on Lollapalooza soon followed, but the trek would be the band's last major tour and Alice in Chains would be hard pressed to maintain their momentum.
Alice in Chains released the EP Jar of Flies in 1994 and a self-titled album in 1995, but they did not tour to support either offering. During this relatively quiet time, Staley provided vocals for the 1995 debut album from Mad Season, which also featured Pearl Jam's Mike McCready and the Screaming Trees' Barrett Martin. While rumors swirled about Staley's declining health and drug dependency, the group surfaced in 1996 to perform on MTV's "Unplugged" series. Save for a series of compilations cobbled together by Columbia, it would be the last music Alice in Chains would release.
Cantrell pursued a solo career, releasing Boggy Depot (which also featured AIC's Inez and Kinney) in 1998, further fueling rumors that Staley was in ill health. The singer did little to quiet the rumors with his one-off appearance alongside Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins and Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble on a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" that appeared on the soundtrack of 1998's "The Faculty."
While Staley's output had greatly diminished in recent years, his influence hasn't. Traces of the frontman's distinct vocal style and Alice in Chains' thick-as-a-brick sound can be heard in the work of Godsmack, Creed, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, Adema and a host of others.

bury me softly in this womb
i give this part of me for you
sand rains down in here i sit
holding rare flowers in a tomb...in bloom...
down in a hole and i don't know if i can be saved
see my heart, i decorate it like a grave
you don't understand who they thought I was supposed to be
look at me now, a man who won't let himself be
down in a hole, feelin' so small
down in a hole, losin' my soul
i'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied
down in a hole and they've put all the stones in their place
i've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste
i have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
i will speak no more of my feelings beneath
down in a hole, feelin' so small
down in a hole, losin' my soul
i'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied
bury me softly in this womb
oh i want to be inside of you
i give this part of me for you
oh i want to be inside of you
sand rains down in here i sit
holding rare flowers
oh i want to be inside of you
in a tomb...in bloom...
oh i want to be inside...
down in a hole, feelin' so small
down in a hole, losin' my soul
down in a hole, feelin' so small
down in a hole, outta control
i'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied...

Isn't "transexual shemale" mildly redundant?
well, it depends really. by definition a transexual is someone who has went through a sex change operation or who has sexual identification with the opposite sex. a shemale on the other hand is a female with male genitalia.
think of it as chicks with dicks screwing guys living a lie. or vice versa.

There have been a lot of people coming back for that reason lately. Sorry to hear you're feeling empty, I've been there and it sucks.
I've had this name almost since the beginning. I posted mostly in the LC, and just kind of lurked in the Barracks. I never posted much in the old Layne thread, at least not in the beginning. It was really painful at the time (as I'm sure you know), and it got to be a pretty cliquey (not sure if that's a word lol) thread, so I just felt like I was intruding.
We're naming our son Layne. We felt it was the best tribute we could make to such an amazing guy. And I recently found out I'm scheduled to have him on June 22nd, which is exactly two months before Layne's actual birthday.

They do a tribute every year on or around his birthday, which is August 22nd. This is the first year I've been able to go. I usually go on my vacation to visit family in Ohio in August, so I always miss it. Since the baby is too young to travel, I'll be around this year.
There is a candlelight vigil on Friday night, at the fountain in Seattle where the first vigil took place. Then they do a tribute show with a bunch of bands on Saturday night. I'm not sure who the bands are yet, but I'm pretty sure they've posted it on their MySpace page.

I know! I can't remember how many times I went into the thread, and someone was like "oh man, that sucks." I'm thinking, ummm, this happened 4 years ago (at the time anyway). I read something recently where Jerry was quoted as saying he was pissed because he felt like Layne's death was being swept under the rug. I feel the same way everytime I see someone talking about Kurt Cobain. Not to start a Kurt Vs. Layne thing, but it really bothers me that it seems like no one remembers Layne. :(

I can finally write that the tribute starts the day after tomorrow! And Mike, I just read that they'll be streaming the Sat. night tribute on the internet. If you go to their MySpace page (Layne Staley Fund) there is a link to it. The two bigger bands are Tantric and Hurt.
Woooooo, I can't wait!

so i don't wanna hear you say "i'm impressed people ask me who Layne Staley is" when most people were still, like, toddlers when he died. cause i'm included in the bunch, and it sucks, cause i didn't know who he is, i had to ask you too, and even though now i know his name, it still don't know more about Alice In Chains.
there's these kind of things you just can't control, certain knowledge you can't have, because you just weren't there to acknoledge them. i wouldn't know of the stones if they were still touring, cause even though they're a fucking hude band, i didn't hear about them before that. i knew about Queen when i was 8 cause we had a "best of" of them and god knows how much time it would've took me to know about them.
it might sound like a rant, but more like stating facts. i <3 you and stuff, but please taking into considerationg that you're 11 years, if not more, older than me and the other people around here and that we can't ALL know about those kinda things.

You're not ranting, I completely understand. I'm sorry I came across that way. It's like when Mike and I were talking about the video from 1989. It doesn't feel like all that long ago until you stop to think about it. I'll admit I have a slight chip on my shoulder when it comes to Layne and the fact that people don't remember him. I respect Kurt Cobain, but it's hard for me to hear everyone talking about him, and never mentioning Layne. I <3 you too, and it's all good.

Last night was unbelievably amazing. Hurt and Tantric completely kicked ass, and Riverbend was a really, really good band. I'm going to see them play next Saturday. We were right up on the railing during Tantric, so we might be in there!

Whatever happened to Cantrell & Co reviving the band with a new lead singer?
Temperance
08-27-2008, 06:01 AM
They did, but as far as I know it was only a temporary thing. They had/have William Duvall as the singer, and they toured for a bit in 2006 and I think 2007. I'm not sure if they have plans for recording a new album or anything. Jerry has said in the past that they would love to move on and create new music, but not as Alice in Chains. It would have to be a new band name.
Temperance
08-30-2008, 09:08 AM

Why get a new lead singer at all? Cantrell is more than capable of taking care vocals on his own.
he is a talented vocalist, but I believe that AiC's harmonic vocals were a large part of their draw. and you just can't do that with one voice. not live, anyways.
Widge
08-30-2008, 10:45 PM
Hopefully if they are doing a new album with this guy, the songs live up to how good the band was back when.
And I listened to some stuff with the new guy on Youtube and he seems to be pretty decent, if not pretty good, at doing Layne's little vocal tics.

Nothing Safe is a pretty good introduction to Alice, and Unplugged is great because you get to hear the guys interacting with each other and the crowd. so I'd say you started in the right place.
the first Alice album I ever got was the self-titled one (kind of late in their career)... it's still my favorite album. but my favorite song by them is "I Stay Away", from Jar Of Flies.

If I had to recommend an album, I suppose it would be "Dirt." It was their biggest selling album, and it has the most songs that were/are played on the radio. The unplugged album is awesome, I'm glad you have that one.
EDIT: Mike, how could I forget "Jar of Flies?" My favorite from that EP is Nutshell...so amazing.

I just turn into such a moron when I'm around famous people. I have no clue what to say. Thankfully it won't be like a "meet and greet" setup, we'll just get to hang out backstage. I mean really, what the hell do you say to Jerry, Sean, and Mike?! Oh, and William as well, no idea what I'll say to him.

Wow, was that crazy!!! I not only got to see AiC live in concert, but I got to see the entire show from onstage! We got a text from Susan Silver (their manager) asking us if we wanted to come up onstage. You know, because there was no way we wanted to do that! I was standing ten feet away from Sean. When they came offstage before the encore, they were standing 6 inches away from me. I just about died. And I will say, William Duvall held his own. He's no Layne Staley of course, but he did a good job. After the show we got to go backstage and meet with all the guys. I didn't get any pics backstage (we were requested to not take pics). I got to meet and talk to all the guys, plus their girlfriends (who were ridiculously hot and unfairly nice and friendly, lol). Mike was awesome, and his hair is even more impressive up close. Jerry was nice as well, but he was still frustrated over some technical difficulties with his guitar during the show. I barely got to talk to him. Sean was the best though. He came over and gave us all hugs, and thanked us for flying in to see them play. Then he told us stories about their song during the Seahawks game against the 49'ers. They were all amazing, and I think I'm still in shock over the whole thing.
In addition to all that awesomeness, I got to hang out with Tantric at their hotel. Those guys are crazy!!! I'm going to attach a few pics. These are from our view from stage left. My camera screwed me by jamming about 10 minutes after we got on stage, so I'm waiting for pics from the other girls.

I think we all realize Layne is not going to be resurrected. I know for me, Layne Staley is still current because I'm a staff member of the Layne Staley Fund. I promote events and do fundraisers and Tribute shows to raise money for heroin recovery. So for me, he's not gone. Yes, I'm not stupid, I realize he's dead. But his memory lives on in the hopes of preventing others from the same hardships.
And I just saw AiC last weekend, so that bit of info is new too. The only threads I complained about were the "what time is it" thread and threads similar to that.

Who's trying to divert attention? Yes, I reported it, so what? I've reported other things as well, and no one really seemed to care about those. Why is this one such a big deal? He says it was a joke, well, I didn't see it that way when I reported it. Now I know it's a joke, fine. What do you want me to do, repent? Get over it.
EDIT: Speaking of diverting attention...being a "real mod" is an issue. It's an issue because a real mod wouldn't have passed around a confidential report. That is how the "report a post" feature is supposed to work, confidentially. And I'm not sure exactly, but how does this involve you?

Out of curiousity, how old are you? I'm only asking because a lot of people on this board were/are too young to have been into AiC when they first came up out of Seattle. And yes, they were pioneering.
Have you ever had problems with drugs? If not, you have no idea what it's like to struggle with them. Of course no one made him do the drugs, that was his choice. I hate that people stereotype others with drug addictions. Yes, there are drug addicts who do horrible things, but there are those that struggle everyday to pull themselves out of it. He was so much more than a "loser junkie." Have a heart for a second and try to see past the surface.

Tell me what have they done that was so remarkable, so great, so different, and unique from other musicians that it had a lasting impact and change on the industry and music? They were a band, they had a few hits, and people enjoyed them. That's all.
Why would I have problems with drugs when I'm not stupid enough to try them? I don't want to struggle, so I don't do them. Plain and simple. I do not have sympathy for people who make their own problems for themselves.

stupidity is barely a factor for taking drugs. most people do them because there's something else behind it, not because they're idiots nor because it's cool. you usually fall into that pattern because you need to evade from something and it's way too much to bare while sober.

Since no one answered, I'll ask again. How old are you? It does matter, because when AiC broke out in Seattle (before Nirvana) it was a huge musical shift. Sure, AiC doesn't look pioneering now. I'll even admit to that, they haven't released a new album since 1993 (aside from the Unplugged album, but that wasn't new material). Obviously this argument is never going to go anywhere. I'm not going to change you're mind, and you certainly aren't going to change mine. You've made your point, I've made mine. I would like nothing more than for this thread to be a place where the people who do have an interest in Layne and AiC can post about it.

Yeah? well I've had a lot of horrible things to deal with, and that's just it, I don't run away from them, I deal with them, instead of injecting something into myself. No sympathy for escapism.
I'm 22. my age doesn't matter, I was well aware of the music at that time period.
I'd like nothing more than for this thread to disappear since what is said here could just as likely be stated in the SWOYM. If anything the threads kind of fanatic in a sense considering, its just a guy in a band, its just as bad as the Mike Shinoda thread in the other forum.

not everyone has the same way to react to things. and it's not that easy to face whatever you're going through. some get smashed, some get high, some kill or mutilate themselves, and some others like yourself just deal with them everyday. but consider the fact that it's not cause you're capable of doing it that everybody can. and it's not because some fall into drugs that they're ignorant or idiots.
since you keep complaining about how this thread doesn't belong here, name threads, except SWOYM, that do. because the way you speak, it seems that not a thread in this forum should be existing right now. i'm not part of the people that complain about useless threads so don't give me that argument. i believe some are stupid, including threads i post in, but why the fuck should anyone care? if the thread keeps getting recreated, it's cause there's people posting in them, and that what makes the community around here: people. so just leave them be. and post in whatever thread you may like, create whatever thread you may like, and it'll be up to the mods and admins to judge their utility.

Do you realize that the only reason this thread is around is to commemorate the OLD Layne Staley thread, which lasted for more than 5 years because people kept bumping it as a joke? Trust me, Widge really doesn't care about respecting Layne Staley's memory. Why the hell would anyone create a thread about the death of someone seven years ago and post it like it was news?

I get that some people take this thread as a joke. I was around for the original thread, so I know this was made to commemorate that. And for a long time that thread was kept alive with current posts, not just someone bumping it (although there were people who did that too). However, I (and a couple other people) like that we can discuss Layne, and the band, in this thread. I don't get why people are so annoyed by it. If it bothers you that much, just ignore it.
Aside from that...
Mike, can you give me any suggestions for bands that could play next years Tribute? I'd like them to have some connection to AiC or Layne, similar to both Hurt and Tantric (they toured a little bit together, and also had a few manager/producer type people in common). Thanks for any help!

Once again, thanks for agreeing with me Mike.
I have thought about Staind, and I love that song. Aaron Lewis is a member of the LSF, so I would hope he would do it. Even if he did his solo thing that would be pretty cool too. They always have a couple of local bands open up the show. Riverbend plays every year, and I know of a few pretty popular local bands. All of the bands that played this year did at least 2 AiC songs during their set (even Tantric and Hurt). Tantric did "Rain When I Die" and it was fabulous. I'm not sure about tribute bands, as I believe the appeal is seeing well known bands. They are who will raise the most money for the Fund. I would love if I could get Mike McCready to do something, but I have no idea what he's doing these days.

heh... well that's all over the map, no help there. :p
well why don't I start from the end and work backwards. AiC's last new album was the self-titled one. "Heaven Beside You" was the big single, try that one. then try "Grind" and "Again". those three songs are pretty much all different from each other. should help you get an idea of why it's hard to recommend songs haha.

I can't even attempt to narrow it down to a few songs. I can get to about three, and then I start thinking about all the other great songs, lol. "Sludge Factory" is one of my favorites from that album, although I think I like the Unplugged version more. It just sounds more raw.

"Sludge Factory" is a great track, I could definitely make a case for that being my favorite track on the album. agreed on the Unplugged comparison. I feel the same about "Over Now".

Very true about "Over Now." I usually miss it on the CD because my commute only takes me through "Frogs" lol. And after thinking about the album yesterday, it was the one I listened to on the way to work this morning. I must also add "God Am" to the list, as well as "Shame In You."
EDIT: Argh, I forgot about "Head Creeps."
No more time
Just one more time
So crazy, beat the strain
Too lazy, shake the gray
So, and she willed the drain
So let me be defamed
Your redundancy stains
Tired of infantile claims
Like puppets on their strings
Untangle you from me
Time to call the doggies off
Tired of the shadowin'
Slide me to the side again
Slapped in the face again
No more time
Just one more time
Your redundancy stains
Tired of infantile claims
Live puppets on a string
Untangle you from me
Chorus
One day my plane leaves
Some way my head creeps
Some day my head leads
Some way my head creeps
Empty room sets the scene
Pick at me slow, pain fiend
Suck me through barbed screen
Anger becomes our Queen
Tongue whipping forked black
How long until you crack
Surprised and set back
Lackey's loose talk for fact
Chorus
One day my plane leaves
Some way my head creeps
Some day my way leads
Some way my head creeps
So crazy feel the hate
Yeah, I've got years to wait
I know it's not too late
Lending clean hands to fate
Rise from the dirt I'm in
Hide in another's skin
Stick black dress doll with pin
Your mouth takes on my grin

Are they? That's cool, I mean look at AC/DC, when Bon Scott died they bought in Brian Johnson and still had huge success. The fans embraced Brian. I'm sure the same would happen with AiC.

it would be good to start playing again. but i don't know if i would miss Layne too much to listen to the songs.
i think they should keep going, just with a different name.

I guess the band will have to have a think about how they want to persue things. I guess they'll do whatever makes them comfortable.

I'm torn. you are absolutely right about AC/DC, Lindy... and I can think of other bands that change lead singers and keep going... Drowning Pool is a great example, three albums with a different singer on each one. I just wonder if anyone is brave enough to step in and try to fill that void with AiC.

I half-agree with you on that, but then I think, they're still going to play the old songs. and then maybe someone will be upset thinking that they should have left the legacy alone, etc.
still, it wouldn't be the first time that a band changed their name without abandoning their catalog. before Sevendust got big, they were called Crawlspace, and under that name they had a song on the soundtrack to one of the Mortal Kombat movies ("My Ruin", which appears on Sevendust's debut album).
by the way, hello, I'm Mike. :)

well, yeah..the old songs would be hard to hear with a new lead singer. that's what i was saying. but also it wouldn't be fair that they just give up the whole idea for that. it's a tough decision =P

Sheesh, I missed like 10 posts in this thread. How on earth did I do that?!
Okay, yes, they are releasing a new album. I believe sometime in January 2009. They are keeping the Alice in Chains name. They are moving forward with the singer they've been using for a while, William DuVall.
I'm torn about the singing change. No one will ever be able to replace Layne. However, I saw AiC perform in Arizona in September. William did a very good job with the older songs. His voice is nothing like Laynes, and he doesn't try to be, which in my opinion is good because he would fail miserably.
I think as long as they stick to the AiC harmonies, it will sound similar to the older stuff. Jerry will still be singing, so I hope it would retain some of the sound we all love.
