Had a friend pass away last week, hearing this song made it easier. "With Cards and flowers on the window, your friends all plead for you to stay".

I don't think the words were meant on these lines, but does anyone know the real pretext.

"The sun will set for you" felt like an appropriate epitaph.

Thanks, Kev

this song mean to mean losing someone closed and they are just withering away/ that where the lyrics pink cards and flowers on your window/ meaning a dying person in a hospital or someone and that were you friends plead for you to stay/ it quite poetic/ like valentine day which lyrics that sound coming from a poem. these two song or dediticate to johnny cash or chazz father who died.

The meaning is confusing.

I thought it'd be a soldier going to war or just someone close dieing.

The music video doesn't help the confusion. It's like a midnight apocolypse.

I don't associate it with war. Just death of someone very close to you.

You know what I thought it meant?
A symbolism of hope.
"And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey"
I associate the sun with something that's undesired/evil.So when there's shadow, people will embrace it and believe there's hope.
But that's what I thought, too optimistic for a song that you guys think it's about death, huh?

Cool, this is the same way how I interpret the meaning of the song. In my opinion, I think this is their best song ever.

Shadow Of The Day rocks, I was almost crying when they played it at Manchester! And it's a format of writing that I love-dark lyrics with uplifiting music. And this is one of the best efforts I've ever heard. I don't really think the video goes with the words, but I don't think it'd have worked so well if it had been more literal like What I've Done.

I think it means someone close to you dieing, suicide and the other things that people said

Not only it has to do with death...but also someone you love going away, being far, etc. And probably accusing who/what has caused that...I do think that there is some politic in it.Look at it's video...

Glad to hear that some people think this song is about hope and not about something depressing like death/suicides/goodbyes (which I absolutely hate btw)...That's why when the single came out I was like...WTH?Yeah,this song is comforting I agree eventhough it's somehow agitating cause the intro sounds like U2's with or without you.

Has anyone else noticed that in the video, the alarm clock reads 11:55, which is FIVE minutes to midnight. Shadow Of The Day is TRACK FIVE on Minutes To Midnight...ok you've probably all already worked this out months ago but I still think it's cool :p

The Sun represents evil and Shadow represents good??
To me that seems really backwards, but if it works for you then it works for you:) ..............are you a vampire?? lol j/k:D

"And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey
and the sun will set for you"
The way I see it is everything in this place come to an end. There's nothing negative in it, it's just the way it is, something that come to us all and has to be accepted.
like;
"Everything falls apart, even the people who never frown eventually break down
Everything has to end you'll soon find
we're out of time left to watch it all unwind"
:)

the lyrics of "shadow of the day", to me, always bring to mind the idea of a close friend moving away. :o and starting a new life far away.

lyric means love( break up ??? ) but the video means Wars Torn World.
.The clock go off when 11:55. near 12:00. It's the clock Doomsday.
another way to understand the lyric meaning beside mean love

/And the shadow of the day/
/Will embrace the world in grey /( the darkness will plunge the world into fire of wars, wars , the racialism, the death )

/And the sun will set for you/ ( the sun will not shine the land . and human will be abadoned in the darkness 4ever )

this video shows the life contradiction
because in beginning of the video, shows chester peaceful in his sleep, protected inside his home
and in the end, they shows him hopeless, about to die

The song can mean whatever you want it to mean as for the video, I think it was more focused around the albums title then the song itself but does combine with the song in a way. I've listened to the song countless times and to me, the song is just about paying respect and moving forward of a loved one who has either passed away or taken a serious move.

I like this song because it takes a positive from a negative meaning you can enjoy the song either way! Same with songs like "Breaking the Habit" (in some circumstances) and "With You".

I know i posted earlier but i though about it a bit more lol and i think it is about endings, and that all things end, good and bad.

so no matter how good or bad things are they will always end eventually, which is both sad and comforting. in this way i think it can be about relationships, like lots of people interpret it, or about the wrlds problems, like in the video, where it seems to be sayin that we have to find a way to end the violence.

i think the shadow sounds like the positive thing, because it says it will "embrace" the world, which sounds kinda like protectin, and "in grey", which sounds like forgettin, goin blurred, or maybe just bein able to move on to a different "day", because this one is over.

If we understand the song like that , it will not suitable for the video

Well, the first time I heard it I thought it was about suicide. But now I know it's not.

Don't ask me how I thought that. 'Cause I don't know.

well from watching the interview that was posted before. It seems like its a way to give a final farewell to someone that your close to. And i think when it says the sun will set for you... its kind of like saying nothing bad can happen from here on out, to the point where you will be comfortable with whats happening. Its a pretty powerful message....

At first I thought it was about suicide too....but whether it's actually about suicide or a soldier going to war....it can wreak havoc in the mind of a suicidal person

I thinks it connected to death and life. Moreover It is about of someone's dying. It is so lyrical and difficult to understand some of the sentences too

"pink cards and flowers on your window,
your friends all plead for you to stay
sometimes solutions aren't so simple
sometimes goodbye is the only way"

I feel this is more to do with a beloved one in hospital who has decided against treatment or an operation. Sometimes the teatment can be too much to bear...

They have decided if the worst should happen its there time. Family plead to change their mind whilst coming to terms with the decision.

:) my two cents.

I always took it mean someone who's suicidal and everyone wants him to live but he insists that there's no solution to his problem and wants to die.

I agree, it does say in the lyrics, "The sun will set for you"
