What? Are you kidding? The lyrics are extremely lame!

This is an awsome song. I'm surprised they have never performed it live (if they have, I must not be looking hard enough) like High Voltage. I hope they play it in the future.

It's a reference to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. A giant stone monolith is one of the major parts of the plot of that movie. One scene shows it floating through space, = "float overhead like a Space Odyssey monolith."

Do you know how that all fits in the song? I still have some trouble understanding the whole point, too, hehe.

Haha, the only reason I even knew that is because I'm a huge fan of that movie. I've watched it well over a dozen times. Great movie, hard to really grasp the first time you watch it though.

As for the meaning of Dedicated as a whole, I think a lot of it is metaphorical for how Mike wants to change how people look at rap music. A lot of the first verse seems to be about how Mike is hoping the whole materialistic rap scene (guns/drugs/women/bling) is just a phase and that sooner or later all the "intoxicated and stimulated emcees" will just disappear and people will get back to rapping about shit that actually matters - "people don't talk about keeping it real/it's understood that they actually will."

The 2nd verse kind of carries on with that, the scene with the bum on Sunset Strip is Mike giving an example of stuff that actually matters (there are way too many homeless people in America, even in rich places like Las Vegas), but that mainstream rappers never seem to give a crap about. Then you have the whole monolith part, which I'll explain in detail:

"while emcees fight to see who can be the commonest/we float overhead like a Space Odyssey monolith/overseeing the game/overbeing all the same old thing/it's all gonna change"

Basically, Mike's saying that while you have dumb rap rivalries going on that serve as nothing more than publicity stunts (see: Jay-Z/Nas or Kanye/50), underground people like him (remember this song was recorded before ANYONE outside of SoCal knew who the hell Hybrid Theory/Linkin Park was) are trying to bring about change and evolution of the rap game. Another note on the monolith, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the first time the monolith appears is in prehistoric times in front of a bunch of monkeys. After the monkeys are visited by the monolith, the next day, one of them gets the idea to use a bone from a dead animal as a hammer/weapon (evolution of mankind). The monolith in the movie serves as a physical manifestation of what brings about evolution/enlightenment for the human race, and Mike is using that in the context of bringing about evolution of the rap scene.

As for the chorus, it's basically a rallying cry (as a good chorus should be), it's like "This is for all the people who are just as sick and tired of meaningless rap songs as I am."

I adore Mike's references, some of which just go right over my head for a while XD

And apparently he enjoys movies, eh? Like in Strange Things [FMM]

"Like 'Flatliners', you see that flick? People die and come back seeing crazy shit."
Forgive me if I was off on the "Like" thrown in there...it's been a while since I've listened to it after all.

and about that movie, it was rather enjoyable :]]]

OH and Akira! <3 Good stuff.

Wow...that's deep. But he's right. I'm tired of the guys like Snoop Dog doing music videos about women and stuff. I don't notice things like these, but that's usually because I'm still pretty young, and think about myself playing these songs at a concert with my band (currently in progress ;) ).

I saw it as well kinda like the critics can say what they want but at the end of the day it doesn't matter because it's not about them, it's about the kids who are listening to the music.
"Because say what you will, and say what you might
But don't ignore who it's for at the end of the night"

I noticed something on the It's going down scratch acapello. I know that at the start of regular It's Going Down, Mike says "watch them flee" and "hip hop hits" was taken from Dedicated, but on the acapello you can clearly hear piano of Dedicated while Mike's going "Watch them flee, hip hop hits".

He actualy says "hip-Hop heads" and not hits.

What always went through my head is when did he really record this? because i watched this video ages ago of Mike at a radio station, when asked to freestyle, he rapped dedicated, so If he freestyled dedicated right there and then, then just wow seriously. So the question is when was it recorded? if after then Mike proabably did freestyle it then and there, if dedicated was recorded before that then i don't know he wouldn't do that, what type of fool lies and pretends to freestyle when its recorded? everyone would know about it then so i beleive that he actualy did freestyle it before recordidng it which is way too good to be true. But if any one knows anything about this then please, help me out here.

the dedicated we all know was before the freestyle. And you may wonder why would he "freestyle" with Dedicated? meh, Mike himself said he sucked at freestyling, so he's forgiven. Both the times he freestyles he says the same thing so well, starts with Dedicated and then some new rhymes come up, but they do feel rehearsed.

Who's "we" exactly? and how are you so sure that it was recorded before freestyled? and no im not wondering why he did so the guy can do whatever with himself, haha.

Dedicated was recorded in 1999, says so right on the LPU 2.0 CD cover, the Wake Show freestyle was done in like, late 2001. Simple as that.

And FYI, VERY few rappers who "freestyle" actually make up lyrics on the spot. They tend to use verses and lyric bits that they wrote previously but haven't used on anything. Dedicated was a completely unknown and unreleased song at the time of the Wake Show freestyle (LPU 2.0 was released in late 2002), so it's not like anybody had heard the lyrics prior to that. The other verse that Mike spit on the Wake Show was also written years prior to that, Mike said so himself.
