At the beginning of the video Chester Bennington wakes up. His alarm clock reads 11:55, the current Doomsday Clock time, referencing the album title Minutes to Midnight. The video is over four minutes long, meaning that the time at the end would be 11:59 PM, or one minute to midnight. Chester then watches the news, washes up, gets dressed, and goes outside. We then see that the video takes place in a war torn world, where mass chaos is ensuing on the streets of the city. There is a lot of violence going on with many police and gunshots. Near the end of the video, a car is set on fire and bursts into flames in one of the most intense shots of the video. Chester then stands in front of the burning car, while looking hopelessly at the carnage that surrounds him. He then turns towards the flames, and the video fades to black!!!

There's another ending where he got shot. *shrugs* I have seen too many political related videos in my life to say that this video is much more special. However, it's still awesome.

I understand now the meaning of the video, however, it still makes no sense, i cant find a relation between the video and the song. It's like they're talking about two different subjects. The video makes sense relating it to the album title and thats it (because the title of the album and the songs in it, the subjects of the songs, make little sense to me too).
Isn't SOTD talking about departure and loneliness and stuff like that?... i dont know. I try hard to understand this new album but i really cant find any relations between this video, SOTD and the album title, its driving me insane.
One thing, WID, the song suggested me one thing and when i saw the video it was like it had another meaning, we were all blown away by that i think. I believe Hahn tried to do the same thing here, but in my opinion he failed greatly...

I always felt that SOTD was talking about loosing someone close to you [through death], so the version of the video where Chester is shot in the end ((does it actually exist? I haven't seen it)) would make sense in relation to that. However, the rest of the video has little relevance to this idea, other than to set up the final shot, in which case that's one damn long intro.
The video is a powerful one, but I agree, not entirely relevent to the song. In my eyes at least.
Still love it though :)

"And that's why I think music is so personal. People, you know, wear the bands that they listen to like armor, the music that they enjoy speaks volumes about the kind of person that they are." ~ Chester Bennington

I want to start out by saying that this song made me search for Linkin Park and had me listening and watching the video over and over. I am very intrigued by the song and it's video.
I don't consider myself a LINKIN PARK type of fan. I think their past rock offerings have been "Too Harsh" for my listening. Due to that harshness, this song caught my attention. What a tangent. I couldn't think about much else other than, "What is this song about, and what is Linkin Park trying to say?" BTW, who wrote this song?
In searching the internet for ANYTHING about metaphorical analysis, I ran across several blogs and message boards stating how Linkin Park alientated their true fans with this album. I wouldn't know anything about that. But something must be said about how their new album made me turn my head and ask, "Who sings this?"
OK.....SOTD....ad nauseum I keep reading the SAME stuff about the obvious metaphor to the Doomsday Clock. And that is about as far as the analysis goes. How sad. Back in my day, writers were still writing books and in school we had to read them and dissect their meanings and metaphors. I think tomorrow's readings and studying will be about today's serious song writer. SOTD will definately be worth the listen, and the video worth watching.
Without watching the video, and just going by the lyrics I heard on the radio, I got the impression this song was about suicide. Why the heck would anyone write about suicide? It sounded almost as stupid as some other lyrics I heard (know it's not by LP)about 'cocking a gun and pulling the trigger'. Perhaps this is what people are seeing....The human race is committing suicide = doomsday....case closed. The somber music, though, made me think more about the attitude of the subject of the song, and put me more at ease about the song in general.
Once I had the chance to watch the video, it all made sense to me. I think the people who have responded to this thread by saying they "Don't get it" and it's a "Great Song Anyway" are certainly welcome to their opinions, but I disagree. It's a great song, AND the video helps it to make sense.
The video puts our subject in play at 11:55....obvious metaphor...doomsday clock...yaddayaddayadda. but what he does next is fantastically human. He turns on the news, sees destruction, and decides to go about his day. He shaves, dresses, and puts on his boots. This guy is Joe American. No matter what is going on in the world, the day still happens. Why lock the windows and the doors? To give himself an impression of protection.
GREY is very telling. Wars occur because two sides see the same issue either as black or as white. Grey, then, becomes a symbol of peace in the mired world of death and destruction. There are hardly any shadows on a grey day. The grey area is where we as humans have the most in common with each other. We have to be able to see the grey area.
If nothing else, the video places our subject in the middle of the tumult and challenges him to look around and see it happen in his own burrough. Like a big blanket over the entire scene, a Shadow (Many shadows) is(are) present. The fire bombing of the car creates light on the video, but in it's wake, leaves many more shadows.
I once thought the rythmic marching of the military was a simile to the marching of the nazi's. While this may be true, I thought I saw a black guard at some point of the video. Along these same lines, there is no doubt that I saw a little black boy hiding/cowering in a stairwell. Ironically, he was not drowned out in the shadows. His bright eyes (young and imrpessionable) were caught in the light. I think this is a biblical metaphor: The Meek shall inherit the earth. How else would one be able to fathom two sects of white people fighting in the streets. Perhaps this is reverse to what we often see in the inner cities: Blacks/Colored fighting other Blacks/Colored while others stand by and just watch...and the others would not necessarily be children, but people who do not think they can do anything about it. And this brings me to my overall impression of the song and the video.
I think it is written as a statement of futility. Those people who want to give up can wave goodbye when the sun sets. Otherwise, while the people are killing each other, sometimes in front of us, and while others just walk idly by trying not to let anyone see them or to stop themselves from seeing (Closing the blinds) life needs to have some form of regularity. Even in the face of ultimate destruction (Doomsday Clock) we're looking to someone...ANYONE...to come up with a NEW BEGINNING.
Beginnings, like solutions, aren't so simple. If they were, everyone would be doing it.
OK..that's my analysis. I hope someone else comes up with some good stuff, or at least a better presentation. It's been MANY moons since I had to write about things like this. I hope you enjoyed it.

his bug fall on the floor its doesnt means he got shot
I've got my own interpretation of this video:
1. The beginning - as someone said, the clock, minutes to midnight etc and I agree with that. Chaz is waking up and he's like "oh, another, oridinary day"
2. Tv - after waking up Chaz is turning on his television and he sees all the fights in it, then he thinks "The war, not good. But I'm here in my warm flat and I'm safe"
3. Chaz's leaving - now, Chaz is leaving his home and everything is changing. He realises that he's the part of the world and he can't just star at it. Everything concerns him too.
I think the video shows that we all are involved in this all mess of the world. We think that we can't do anything and moreover we don't want to because we feel helpless. But if we want it or not - we're a part of the world and sooner or later all of bad things will concern us too.

oh shit! now I GET IT!!! WOOT! these music videos so far are connected and are telling a story!!
What I've Done - the intro to the story. the video states in general the problems in our world
Bleed It Out - shows us in depth of either how uneducated alot of us are because we just party alot and get drunk and have fights and we're not aware of the bigger problems in the world. in other words, bleed it out starts out the story and shows the source of the problems in our world.
Shadow of the Day - now the minor problems in Bleed It Out are now have grown into a bigger scale because of our crazy society, and now our country is at war!

I believe I can answer your question. I wrote several poems and wanted to try my hand at song writing so I looked up producers and record companies of some of my favorite artists and told them of my interest in song writing and to show them I had some talent I sent them my poems as well. Then all of a sudden I started noticing song with parts of my poems in them. It’s like they stole my poems chopped them up and put them into songs.
You will notice that all my poems are copyrighted prior to the making of the songs and this can be verified through the library of congress where they were copyrighted.
http://janes-poetry.tripod.com/index.html
Here is my poetry site so you can see what I’m talking about. I was pissed so I unpublished it but I put it back up for the moment so you could see what I was talking about. Ok your Lincoln Park song Shadow of the day
Their line: the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey
My line: Darkness take lights joys scheme envelop all I see, days color holds no joy if he be not here with me (poem title Come Night)
(This one isn’t word for word but the concept is very unusual and I wrote it years before their song)
Their line: the sun will set for you
My line: after the setting of the sun what reward for all I’ve done, what is to be given me for all I am and all I’ll be, what will be mine alone, please to be loved a happy life and a happy home (poem title Chasing the Sun)
Its like they answered my question…after the setting of the sun what will be mine….the sun will set for you= I will be loved. And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey= the darkness will bring joy and the one I love
Other songs that came out after I sent them my poems
Just walk away by Kelly Clarkson
Their line: just walk away
My line: walk away and let it die (poem title Head)
Their line: should you stay or should you go, if you don’t have the answer
My line: How do we know where to stop or if this is the time to go
Skillet Whispers in the dark
Their line: I’ll light the night with stars
My line: come stars light up the sky (poem Come Night)
Their line: Whispers in the Dark
My line: Whispers reach out through the dark (poem kinder words)
Dairy of Jane Breaking Benjamin
Their line: Jane so tell me how it should be
My line: All it is and all it should be
Their line: I will try to find my place in the diary of Jane
Sound like a reference to my poetry site and at the top of the search space on my poetry page it always used to say whatever was the title of the poem on the page you would click on but for the over a year it has said the muse constantly on both my sites…it never changes like it used to with every page and it has never changed from the muse…maybe its all in my head but I can tell you I wish I never sent them my poems or the address to my site…and there are many other songs that have strong themes from my poems or several key words or lines…incubus new album…..used unfettered and resplendent, not common words in rock songs or poems from poem beauty rest there….snow patrol .if I just lay here will you lay with me and just forget the world….read poem if ever If ever two souls longed to embrace, Whose love reflected in the other's face, Who each break of morn did say, Wicked sun be gone, here let us stay, Whose legs, limbs with mine were entwined, Whose sleeping face, angelic, made jealous the divine and there are tons more

ok. i've read some of your work and i really like it. But the references to similarities between your writing and other band's lyrics make no sense at all, they are not even that similar and if someone was going to copy your lyrics i doubt they'd only use only one line. One line out of context is kind of meaningless.

Ok so Mr.Hahn said in this itunes behind the scenes interview thing that the song was about shadow and darkness and trying to find the light, and what that situation might be like. He said he tried to interpret it, but you people are looking so hard at the little things you fail to realize the big picture. So maybe the clock says 11:55. Maybe he did it because of the album, maybe he didn't. But we can't base the main concepts of the video off supid little crap like this.

LMAO @ ur sig.^
and... to the person with the poems,
i really don't think they used your stuff
i mean the lines you pointed out aren't all that alike
and even the similarities... i mean they're really commonly used references and i see them all the time in different songs and stuff...
also, in writing a song, it is MUCH much easier to write a whole song from the beginning by yourself, than to cut up a whole bunch of lyrics from poems written by someone else and produce something from diced up pieces of lyrics that is meaningful to you, meaningful in the context of the whole song or that even makes sense together.
it's not practical...
i don't think any of the artists mentioned have ever even seen your poems
and even if they have... the lines are not alike enough to suggest them intentionally copying what you wrote...
at most they've taken inspiration or concept from them...
and you can't say they've violated copyright by being influenced by or taking inspiration from a poem they've seen.
i guess that's what you risk when you send in stuff to other people.

Sound like a reference to my poetry site and at the top of the search space on my poetry page it always used to say whatever was the title of the poem on the page you would click on but for the over a year it has said the muse constantly on both my sites…it never changes like it used to with every page and it has never changed from the muse…maybe its all in my head but I can tell you I wish I never sent them my poems or the address to my site…and there are many other songs that have strong themes from my poems or several key words or lines…incubus new album…..used unfettered and resplendent, not common words in rock songs or poems from poem beauty rest there….snow patrol .if I just lay here will you lay with me and just forget the world….read poem if ever If ever two souls longed to embrace, Whose love reflected in the other's face, Who each break of morn did say, Wicked sun be gone, here let us stay, Whose legs, limbs with mine were entwined, Whose sleeping face, angelic, made jealous the divine and there are tons morePersonally, I think both your's and their's and rather generic, copyrighted or otherwise. What it looks like to me, is that you just went searching the net for anything that resembled your poetry. While that's probably not what happened, that's how I see it.
I'm sure millions of people have recently written songs or poems with the words "just walk away" (or some variation) in them. Or, at least, after you put out your work. It doesn't mean they all ripped you off. :)

I totally agree that the video does not seem to link to the song. In just listening to the song, it seemed to me to be all about dealing with grief. I expected to see a hospital room and someone dying. Boy was I wrong! Though there was alot of dying in the video, it seems that what the band was trying to get at is the apocalypse. What's weird is that the video seems to add whole new layers to the song. So now, we have the personal level, dealing w/death of a loved one. We also have the increasing chaos of the world (expressed by all the news channels showing war). We also have the apocalypse. I love LP! Their songs are ALWAYS soooo deep and poignant! LOVE it!

When I heard a song I pictured a guy jumping off a building!! I guess that's one way to look at the song, but maybe LP wanted the song to have some sort of social/politcal meaning to it instead of a personal one that sounds like their old stuff - "I can't take it anymore" kind of thing.

The song means when things go wrong just pretend there not so bad as if your in your own world. So when the world seems gray make the sun set for you.

I don't get it. Can you explain that a bit?

i do think that the video was great and portrayed what the song was really about...i even loved the fact that it is related to the current problems of the society today...
but i think, for me, the second possible reflection from the song is a death of someone whom you really love...

I didn't quite get how the lyrics and video went together either, but I took the lyrics to mean sometimes to make things better, you have to leave. That leaving is hard, but in the long run will be what you have to do. LP lyrics have always made me think..something that needs to be done more often. So good job, guys.

in my opinion, they got rat-arsed one day on vodka and redbull, tried setting the alarm but did an epic fail hence the time on the clock and decided to base the video on a random action movie, job done!

This video means alot to me. I honestly think its about how crazy the world is and how it effects your life and no matter what the sun will set for you in the end. Its a reminder to have faith! No matter how crappy your life is!
What ive done Is what people have done to the world with War, Pollution, Child abuse, Extiction etc. and before you forgive and change the world you have to forgive and change yourself and what you do "ill face myself" "and let go of what ive done".
LOATR is basicly about remembering the good times and help others remember the good times after youve gone.
