Yeah. Which sucks, but oh well. I was prepared for a 1 or 2 on it, so a 3 was a very pleasant surprise. You took the literature one, you say? They're very different. Literature is about analyzing passages for meaning and comparing texts. Language is about literary devices and analyzing passages for what makes them effective.

How lucky that I happened to come here today! Hii!
Try taking the Princeton Review online "counselor-o-matic" (http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/advsearch/match.asp). Most of my top schools were in their "good match" section; in fact, Bard was my number one according to it. So, if you have no clue at all, it could be a good starting place. What kind of school do you want: big or small? Do you want to stay in the north east, or do you not care? Most private colleges have need-based financial aid, just if that's an issue for you. Plus there are loads of scholarship opportunities out there. There's a right college for everyone! Oh, the Fiske College Guidebook has been helpful for me. If you don't want to buy it, you can always just go spend a good hour at the book store and make notes about which colleges sound good. And there's a thing with "similar schools" which is a good way to learn about new schools.
Uhmmm, and talk to your counselor, if you have a good one. Mine kind of sucks, but usually they are helpful.
[/abby's college hunt tips]
I basically have my list down (in preferential order):
Wesleyan University (CT)
Claremont McKenna College (CA)
Brown University (RI)
Bard College (NY)
Reed College (OR)
Carleton College (MN)
Rice University (TX) and
University of Texas at Austin.
Although I think I want another school in the north east. =/ Maybe Tufts or Vassar. I'm petrified of not getting in to any of them though. =|

Well aren't you full of information! I will check those out. It's not like I have absolutely no idea, I just don't really know where to start, because how much further am I if I go and visit somewhere and don't like it? If I go to a private school (which I have been leaning towards) then the amount of financial aid wil definitely be a factor. My parents have been urging me to look at less selective private schools who will be more impressed with my resume and offer me more money than the universities where I would be in the middle 50%. But you always are told to work your ass off in high school so that you can get into the best possible colleges. I don't want to have tried so hard with my only reward being scholarship money at a mediocre school. I forget if I've asked; how did you do on the SAT and ACT?
My old counselor got brought up on charges of soliciting a prostitute, actually. Also, he only had three fingers on his left hand because he stuck it into a running snowblower to try to clear it out. So he was an idiot. We have this new woman who is still sort of learning the ropes, but she seems competent.
Any of those that you're particularly leaning towards? And you have certainly looked far and wide; most people from my high school stay in the general area. Most end up at the state universities, but the ones looking for the big college atmospheres go to Syracuse University, which is 20 minutes away and is about 30,000 students.
Tufts is political science, isn't it? A friends of my sister's is there, and he's a big politics guy.

You parents have a good idea, but still apply to more selective schools as well because you can use your other financial aid packets as bargaining. Also, look for schools that are need-based. That means that, based on your FASFA information, they will calculate how much your family can provide and then waive the rest of your tuition. I haven't taken the ACT yet, and the soonest I'll be able to is December 8th. I'm still not sure if I will or not yet, seeing as none of my schools require it. I got a 1950 on the SAT, a 730 on the SAT US History subject test and a 650 on the SAT Math Level II test. I'm going to take the regular SAT again though, to see if I can improve any. How did you do?
Oh wow. That's intense. Well, uh, it wouldn't hurt to talk to her about things. She can probably help you in the right direction.
I mean, Wesleyan is definitely my top school. But, other than Rice and UT, the rest are pretty much on the same level. Reed might be too crazy for me, and I'll probably not get into Brown. I just decided that I wanted the experience of living somewhere completely different. If there were more good, small, liberal arts schools in Seattle and Portland, I'd probably be applying to mostly those. I love the Pacific Northwest; it's such a beautiful part of the country. At my school, a significant portion usually stay in town at one of the small colleges here, a fair number go to state schools (UT, Texas A&M, Texas State, etc.) and then another good amount go to the types of schools that I'm looking at. Within my grade level though, huge numbers of kids are looking at the same type of school as I am.
Tufts isn't only political science, but it does have a really great program in it. I think it's one of the more popular majors. Of my schools, only Claremont McKenna is a "focused" school. It's mainly got economics, government, international affairs and business type classes. If I went there, I'd probably do and interdiceplinary program in International Affairs and Economics. =/

Most of the state schools are around $20,000, which my parents have told me that they can pay for completely. Otherwise I would have to come up with some money myself or take out loans. But ideally, I will graduate from college debt-free. St. Bonaventure's average financial aid package is $16,000. And that's in grants, not loans, which is fantastic. But at the same time, I would be in the top 1% in standardized test scores. So there's a lot to think about.
If I were you I would not take the ACT. Everyone told me that it was easier than the SAT but it definitely wasn't. Plus, they do the essay at the end when you're at the point where you don't care at all and your brain is completely fried. I ended up with a 31 on the ACT (although I did horribly on the writing and I might take it again if I start seriously looking at a journalism major) and a 2140 on the SAT. I didn't take any of the subject tests.
Would you still fly back home for breaks if you were in the Northeast? I think it would be fun to go some place completely different, but I would be taking a blind stab. I've never been further west than Niagara Falls. The state schools in Texas are gigantic, aren't they?
Any majors that you're looking at specifically? Or is it just Liberal Arts stuff? There's still time to decide that. A lot of people go in undecided.

Yeah, but like Wesleyan's average grant financial aid package is $25,765 and 44% of students qualify for need based aid (according to Princeton Review). I know a lot of other top private colleges have just about the same level of aid. You should have a safety or two that you know you'll be able to afford (with their financial aid included) and that you'll be happy at, but for sure don't let that limit your searches.
Typically people who don't do as well on the SAT do better on the ACT, and vice versa. I'm pretty good in terms of my SAT score and I don't think that my ACT score would be significantly better. I'm going to talk to my counselor about it, though. You should probably look into taking some subject tests. A lot of schools ask for them. And they're super easy. Compared to the AP US History test, the SAT US History subject test is a piece of cake.
Yeah, I probably would. I mean, I wouldn't fly home for every little short weekend off, but for Thanksgiving and Christmas and stuff I would. If I went to Claremont McKenna, I'd drive. It'd be a hellishly long drive, but do-able. Have you really never been west of Niagra Falls? Wow. Sometimes if you get into a school far away they will fly you out to visit in April. My friend's boyfriend got into the University of Chicago and couldn't afford to visit. So, the school paid for him to come and stay. He's going there now. UT is like 53,000, but others aren't quite as big. I generally don't want to go to one, but top ten percent is guaranteed acceptance, so it's a good safety to have.
Not really. I mean, I will probably minor or double major in math no matter what else I do, because I'll be going in with so many credits and I find advanced math fun. If I were forced to pick a major today it would be international relations, but I'm by no means super attached to the idea. I plan to go to graduate school eventually anyway, so unless I do pre-med or pre-law, it really doesn't matter much. Do you know what you want to do?

Yeah I'm gonna apply to a wide range, certainly. From what I've seen so far, I would prefer a private. My sister got the cream of the crop as far as the local state schools go. I can't decide whether it would be weird to go to the same place as her. It's relatively small (only 5,000 undergrads) and being only a year apart might get weird. But I certainly haven't ruled it out.
But I like the private school atmoshpere more, if you know what I mean. The landscaping and architecture and fancy libraries and faciliteis make me feel like college is something different, not just an extention of high school. The few private schools I've looked at have a high schooly feel about them, with the very practical-looking buildings and boring scenery. I don't know, maybe I sound snobbish saying that.
I happen to know (we had a guidance counselor talk in Government today) that today is the last day of registration for the October SAT. Don't know if you were planning on retaking or what. The ACT is definitely geared at more scientifically-minded students, I think. The math is elevated a few levels (still nothing that I think you would have trouble with) and the science section, which was all interpreting charts and graphs and things, gave me some trouble. Are SAT II requirements usually based on the major that you are planning to go into? I don't know too much about those.
Yeah, it's pathetic. I know. Some part of me wants to just wing and and go to the University of Colorado, but I'm afraid that if I leave and go far away for college, I won't come back. I mean I wouldn't mind living somewhere totally different for a while, but I want to be close to my family when I grow up, get married, etc. All three of my dad's sisters live in California (they were born and raised in Upstate New York) and we see them ever couple of years. It would kill me to only see my siblings and parents on rare occassions.
Really? Math fascinates you? I would have guessed you were on the other end of the spectrum. I'm in AP Calc and I'm so nervous about it. Math usually doesn't scare me but if I don't understand how to do something then I panic and get even further behind.
I've only narrowed it down to a social sciencey field. Biology and Geology don't do much for me, and I could never major in math. I hope to God that my AP Calc test will excuse me from any math courses next year. I'm looking at journalism and communications, too. Maybe advertising. Newhouse, at Syracuse University, is one of the top three journalism schools in the country, and my mom works at the state college of Environmental Science and Forestry, which is next door to SU and shares a campus and dorms. So I would get free tuition to Syracuse. But Newhouse is super super selective, which is why I said I will probably retake the ACT if I decide to apply there.
EDIT: It took me so long to write that reply that the site logged me out. I was afraid I was going to have to rewrite all of that.

I don't know if public schools do it, but you could see about doing an over-night there. You could kind of get a realistic idea of what it would be like to go there, especially in reference to your older sister being there.
No, I know exactly what you mean! The private schools are all so beautiful! It makes it seem like such a new and special place, and the generally academic atmosphere adds to that. You don't sound snobby at all, to me anyway. I could be snobby right along with you. God, I'm so excited for college.
The weekend of the October SATs is when Aaron is coming back to town for the first time since leaving for college. So I'm taking the November SATs... Eh, based on what you said, I might do pretty well on it. I just don't know if I care enough to make that effort in addition to the SATs, especially when my schools don't require it. No, the SAT IIs are just more specific tests. Sometimes schools require you to take either a math or science one, but none of my schools do. Also, a lot of school require either the SAT & 2 SAT IIs or the ACT with writing. Just depends on where you're applying.
Going somewhere far off doesn't nessecarily mean that you won't want to go back to where your family is. I just think that, no matter where you end up living, you should have an idea of what else is out there-- just to open up your mind a little bit. And if you feel like you want to be close to your family at this point, then chances are that you will be close to them when it comes time to settle down. That doesn't mean you can't explore first.
Well, I took AP Calc last year and absolutely loved it. The teacher grew to be by far my favorite and the class atmosphere in general was really fun, since I was with all seniors. I mean, that's how Aaron and I got together, basically. But to me, Calculus just kind of justifies all of the other shit that you learned in Algebra II and Pre-Cal. You finally use it in a more interesting way. It's awesome. I've always been good at math, but only last year did I ever like it. I hope BC is as good to me this year.
That's cool. I love the social sciences. It sounds like you've got a pretty good general idea. In terms of looking for schools, you can always look for ones with good journalism programs, or something similar. That's usally indicative of a good program in kind of a larger range of similar fields, since there's overlap with professors and classes and whatnot. Well, haha, just so you know, ACT dates are Oct. 27th and Dec. 8th.

Okay. Back for a second attempt.
Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. Whenever I think of myself in college I see myself striding along the sidewalk in some beautiful courtyard with a backpack and maybe a coffee. How many times that will actually happen I can't be sure. :p But I like the idea of an "institute of higher learning," as corny as that sounds. But when the buildings look industrial and the libraries very practical in a drab sort of way, it just feels generally uninspiring. I'd rather a dining hall be a dining hall than a cafeteria. I'm glad you understand what I mean, because I'm sure I'm not wording this well at all.
And oh my God, I'm excited too. Last year I thought high school was the best thing ever, but I'm starting to get tired of the same old stuff again and again. My class is very sociable and there are hardly any cliques. Every year the teachers are like "We have been hearing great things about your class for years. I'm so excited to finally get to teach you." And the class under us always complains because they always get compared to us. But other than the social aspect of senior year, high school is getting tiresome. It's almost embarassing to be in the same school as the freshmen. With the girls who all straighten their hair and where way too much make-up, and the awkward, gangly boys who only ever talk about sex.
If you're fairly certain about your list and none of them require the ACT, then I would bypass it if I were you. Because if you do bad on it, it's only going to hurt you. Not that I would expect you to bomb it, but there's a possibility that you would go into the test dizzy and with a raging fever. :p
So, what's the deal with AP Calc in your school? Is AP Calc for seniors and accelerated juniors? Or were you in a super-accelerated class? In my school, AP Calc is only for the accelerated seniors, with the regular seniors taking Pre-calc. But there are a few brains who took AP Calc as juniors.

I'm sure it will happen many times. Especially if you visit schools, you see that people do that. It's an awesome idea. You should maybe visit Bard College. It's a little south of Albany, like an hour north of Poughkeepsie. I don't know how close that is to you, but if you could drive there and back in the same day, it wouldn't hurt to just look at it. That's where Aaron goes, and he loves it. It's campus is beautiful, and from what I heard, has a great feel. It's also just a generally good school.
Don't even get me started. Everything that could have possibly changed at my school did. New math and science deans, new MUN sponsor, new principal, new french teacher, new building, new fucking everything. My favorite two teachers left, which was a huge blow. Things are so far from what I imagined them to be that I'm having a hard time adjusting. My class has the stereotype of being super competitive and grade obsessed. That really only applies to a few people, but teachers, while excited that we are slightly more academic than other grades, dread the competitive feel. But, like I said, I'm starting to get used to it.
Yeah. I am still unsure about what I'm going to do, but I have a while to figure it out. By the time I have to sign up for it, I'll know for sure where I'm applying anyway, so I can better gauge what I should do. I just need to do some SAT prep so I can raise that score at least a little when I retake it in November,
It's only a few kids. I'm in Calc BC because I went to Montessori school and was good at math. They just kind of let me keep working, and next thing they knew I'd finished geometry. There are about eight kids in my grade that are advanced. Two of those took Pre-cal as a summer school course to get ahead. Overall, a little more than half of the seniors are at AP Calc AB as seniors and the rest are still in Pre-Cal, and, like I said, the eight of us in BC. It's a really awkward group of kids too; I hate that class.

I will check it out. Any more suggestions are welcome. Sounds like it's about 3 hours east of here, so if I can combine it with another visit it would be worth a shot. Peterson's has been generally helpful in narrowing down choices lately.
Aww, that's too bad. Senior year is supposed to be the best. But haha, I remember always thinking that senior year would be a breeze after being accepted to school. You could just coast through your classes doing minimal amounts of work. So not the case when you're looking for college credit and preparing for the AP tests. As long as everybody isn't a hyper-competitive perfectionist, you'll be fine. It's only ten months. I know the type you're talking about, though, who casually will ask you what you got on something just so that they can gloat quietly.
I can imagine that it's an awkward crowd. Math dorks have such a way about them. No offense to you, of course. There's two in my class who are taking Calc BC at the local community college every morning. One is on the basketball team and thinks he's a ladies man, but he's so awkward in social situations that nobody wants to hang out with him. I am in the same wide social circle as he is and we end up at the same parties, and the only way that he can hold up his end of a conversation is if it's about techy stuff. The other is a gross, pimply little thing who walks to school in the dead of winter (real, Central New York winter) in a t-shirt and shorts. And he's a class A douchebag.
On another note, don't you hate it when people tell you that your high school years are the best years of your life? Doesn't that depress the hell out of you? It's like they're saying that I have nowhere to go but down. I would personally like my last ten years to be the best of my life so I have something to look forward to.

I've never even heard of Peterson's until talking to you. What is it like?
Yeah, hopefully my adjustment will be quick. I get the impression that it will still be like that to some degree, though. Especially in classes that aren't AP or that you're not planning on taking the test for. I'm just super overwhelmed with the prospect of applying in the first place. So many essays! Fucking Claremont McKenna has like 5 on their common application supplement. I don't know what that is about.
Yeah, but I mean really grade crazed. This girl in my math class argued with the teacher for ten minutes about one point he took off. ONE POINT. I eventually just told her she could have one of my points if she shut up; she was quite mad at me. And people are huge perfectionists. I have some perfectionistic tendencies myself, but there are some crazies in my grade.
None taken. Honestly, I never even liked math until calculus. I was never bad at it, but never thought of it as something interesting until then. That sounds terribly awkward. =| In my class, there's this one girl... oh man, I can't stand her. The same one who argued with the teacher over one point. She cried because she wasn't ranked number 1. She was 3rd, but obviously, it was worth crying over. She also is just a very frazzled person because she creates so much stress for herself. There's also this guy who went away to Japan as an exchange student last semester; people literally cheered when he left. He came back wearing a french maid's outfit on the first day of school. He also doesn't wear shoes. He sat behind me in Calc AB and used to put his feet up on the back of my chair. It was disgusting.
Oh god, that petrifies me. I'm just not at all ready to be getting older. I mean, I turn 18 in less than a week, and it just blows my mind. I'm sure, though, that your last years can be your best years. Think about it, you have no commitments, practically. The only thing ominous and overwhelming is, you know, death. But really, I think as long as you don't just spend all of your time wishing you could go back that you could have a splendid time!

But really, I think as long as you don't just spend all of your time wishing you could go back that you could have a splendid time! It's just your typical college search engine. That's the one I was talking about where I took the test and it came back with zero results. It gives specs and financial aid information and my cat keeps biting my fingers because she wants me to pet her.
Yes, applying has me scared shitless. Of course we've talked at length about not knowing where to start, visits, etc., but applications are so overwhelming. I wish there was just a general essay you could write and send to all of your schools. It's like that with all of the NY public schools. I'm afraid that I'm going to put it off and then be cramming in a few months, writing a few essays a night and they'll turn out crappy. We have to do one for my college english class; so hopefully I can rework that into a sendable one.
Eww. She literally cried about it? I know a few people like that. Luckily the girl who is ranked number one is so modest that she won't even tell people her class rank because she doesn't want it to get around. I can't stand the hyper-sensitive about their grades people. The ones who worry and worry and worry when they know that they are going to ace a test. Know-it-all types get on my nerves more than any other. Wait, he literally wore no shoes, or he just took his shoes off when he put his feet on the back of your chair? Because there's a difference.
18 is so weird. I have until march, but the thought is still, I don't want to say scary, just weird. Legally being an adult freaks me out. And one of my best friends, who I've known since I can remember, is turning 20 in a couple of months. The prospect of me being a "grown-up" scares the hell out of me.
On another note, I was shaving this morning and a I hiccupped and now there's a gash on my cheek and my senior portrait is this afternoon. :(

I was at work today and this girl I used to go to high school with came in. I haven't seen her in like, 6 years so we did the whole "omg hi what are you up to now" thing for a couple of minutes and then she said "do you have a facebook thing? I'll add you tonight!"

I'm alright. Most of the time. Working, studying, hapkido, and boyfriend all the same as before.
Shhh, I'm not ready to talk about that yet. =x

Well, there is the common application, which all but one of my schools accept. I've already written that essay, but I have about 10 more to write, plus all of the short answers and writing examples. Sheesh. I have no idea when I'll find the time to write all of them.
Yes. It's terrible. Although Texas has this new, really fucked up rank system where only core classes count towards your rank. And then, there isn't like an average that ranks you, it's a composite. So, say I took a science elective when my friend took an art elective; I'd have like 95 more rank points than her. It's messed up a lot of people's rank. Our number one... there is no way she should be the first. It's just that she's always taken two language classes. A little of both. If he did wear shoes, it would be birkenstock sandals. But mostly, he just doesn't wear shoes. Ewwww!
It seems like just yesterday I was turning 13. Or just a little freshmen... My cousin just turned 21 in August which freaked me out. I used to be really close to her and look up to her a lot and it always surprised me how fast it was between her, you know, going into high school and me doing the same. So now it's scary thinking of how fast 21 is going to come. Also, come June, if we're still together, I'll be dating a 20 year old. What the craappp?
Hahah, oh no! That's very unfortunate. At least it'll make a good story a few years from now? Is this just like your school picture, or is it like your nice, expensive "senior pictures" that everyone is doing these days?

Are your averages weighted? Because ours aren't and it pisses me off. I'm, I think, 12th or 13th in my class, but that's with almost every possible honors or AP Class. A few of the kids in front of me are maybe just in AP Spanish or AP Calc, so they are able to pull off 99s or 100s in regular English 12, or Physics and whatnot. The top three in my class are all grade-obsessed and perfectionists who have full schedules packed with AP classes, but it's not like that with everybody ahead of me. I just don't like that I have a lower GPA than somebody who has an easy schedule. I know that strength of your schedule counts a lot in your favor, but it would be nice to have a top ten class rank along with it.
It's so weird when growing up starts actually becoming a thing that is happening. :p I know we always talk about where we want to go to college, what we're going to do as a career, where we want to live, etc. It's just hard to believe that it's actually happening. I can't picture myself in college in a year, or with an apartment in five years, let alone ten years from now. I could be married. Wow.
Senior portrait is correct the term, actually. It's worth it to have it done nice by a professional. I know Wal Mart has a studio, but I'm sure they're about as talented as the people who come every year and snap a picture of you in elementary school. I guess they can edit it out, but I'm nervous that it will look weird. I'll have to wait and see.

Oh, really? That's not too far south of here. Maybe a two hour drive. It is really beautiful down there. Especially now that the leaves are changing. I'm going hiking in the Adirondack State Park over Columbus Day weekend with a group from school. The foliage at this time of year is breath-taking, especially when you're looking out off the top of a mountain. On clear days you can see over Lake Champlain and all the way into Vermont, which is about 40 miles.

Yes, I noticed when I checked the map for where they are staying. My friend is doing some physics research at the university there. They've uploaded alot of photos and it seems like there are waterfalls everywhere. This summer they did a month-long tour of the country and it definitely showed that the US is worth a visit even only for its nature.
That sounds incredible. I'd love to go hiking in eastern Finland. The mountains there (hills, more like) aren't that high, but the nature is still very beautiful because of all the lakes.

I did. I dislike it though. =P It's occasional, whenever I am available and if they have shifts to offer those days. I do shelving in supermarkets and checkout work in smaller grocery stores. They do offer laundry work and other crappy jobs too. I've done some laudry shifts but standing for 8 hours is really bad for my back and knees. Otherwise that work is fine because you don't have to talk or think. :p I'm not so excited about the social aspect of the checkout work, even though that's the physically least straining work. And I suck at counting.

At Ithaca College or Cornell? Cornell is right on a gorge (they sell shirts that say "Ithaca is Gorges," get it?), so it would stand to reason that there would be a fair amount of waterfalls.
I've never been out of the Northeast, so I can't speak with personal experience about the Midwest and Northwest, but I'm told it's phenomenal. My cousin almost flunked out of the University of Colorado because he spent so much time skiing and hiking in the Rockies. The Outdoors Club advisor at my high school is leaving next year to do an internship, so he wants to do something special with our senior class. As he's told me, his plan now is to go on a 34 mile backpacking trip through the Grand Tetans in Wyoming. I really hope that works out.
The Adirondack State Park in northern New York is 5 million acres, and is the largest park, of both national and state parks, in the US. It has everything you could want, which is why I'm fine to go there three times a year. There are thousands of lakes, literally, many of them pristine. There's nothing I love more than watching the sun set over the mountains with my feet dangling in the water of a cool mountain lake.
Height is not really a concern. It's all relative, really, to how high everything else around you is. So long as you can get the feeling that you're on top of the world, and the sense of accomplishment you get after a grueling ascent, it's all good. And lakes are fantastic, especially the ones that are as they were 500 years ago. Always makes me think of how insignificant I am. In a good way.

Yeah they are, but it just results in like 55 people with 4.0 GPAs. I found out today that I'm still in the top ten (people, not percent) which is cool. No, I can understand that being frustrating. It's almost the opposite problem here; kids who take the most AP classes inevitably end up with the highest rank, whereas kids in arts programs or athletics get screwed because those courses don't count towards rank and GPA, yet show motivation in a different way. You're right though, most schools put equal weight in your rank, GPA and "rigor of secondary school record", as they put it.
Exactly! The most petrifying to me is thinking of things in relation to periods of time. Like, 4 years ago, I was in 8th grade. Four years from now, I'll be applying to grad schools. Yeah. Mostly, I'm okay with it. But I don't like the tools who brag about being ranked 6 or 7 while they have 3 study halls a day and take classes like Basic Food Prep. How free are you to choose your own classes as seniors? The only thing here is that everyone has to take Government (and Economics if you're not in AP Government) and an English class. But there's a number of different English classes you can choose from. SUPA, which is offered through Syracuse University for college credit, Sports in Literature, Creative Writing and regular English 12, which is called College Prep. Otherwise you really have a bunch of choices, but most of the electives aside from the science ones are absolute shit.
Oh wow I know. It seems like High School flew by. So does that mean that the first four years of college will go by as fast? Shit, Abby, in the blink of an eye I will be in the market for a job. And then in another blink I'll be married. Do you ever hear adults say that sometimes they look in the mirror and can't believe that they're adults? That's how I'm going to be. And I don't want to be bugged by things like mortgages and car insurance and student loans and taxes and phone bills and grocery shopping. I'm freaking myself out right now.
Well, I have to apply to Syracuse University, because of the deal I get through my mom. The best of the public schools is Geneseo, which is where my sister is, and I'm going to drive up on Friday and pick her up so she can come home for Columbus Day, and she wants to show my around while I'm there. 5,000 undergrads is enough that I wouldn't be worried being at the same school as her. As far as private schools go, I've looked at St. Bonaventure and I will probably look at some smaller ones near to Buffalo. There's Niagara ("Pat, that's where your Grandfather Dunn went." "I know, Dad, you tell me that every day."), Canisius, St. John Fischer; there's really a ton to choose from in this area. But, as we've discussed in length, I either have to pick some place that's going to give me some money or I will be stuck with student loans. I've decided to apply to an Ivy League, just for the hell of it. How sweet would it be to be able to say to people "I got into Harvard, but I'm not sure whether or not I want to go"

Oh so boy wonder over there stuffs a few death sticks in his mouth? I'm fat remember? Should I post a few potbelly pics?
NO. IM TRYING TO TELL YOU THAT THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T LIE. lmfao, well you're just pure filth sometimes :'(

I forgot about this conversation.. :o
I had no idea, but I just checked her blog and it's Cornell. Gorges, that's hilarious. =P
As I was reading the blog, I noticed an entry about them going hiking in the Adirondacks. I'm convinced that one of their photos was taken at the same spot where you stood in the only picture I've seen of you. (It's probably a popular view spot)
That sounds like a pretty amazing plan, hope you get to go. I've never really been hiking, only for 1/2 day walks. My family had a tent when I was like 4 and I can remember liking camping alot. I've been to Norway once with school and there we did some walking too. Also, my mom is from Lapland so I spent many holidays in the forest picking berries or skiing or just exploring. A friend of mine suggested not too long ago a camping/hiking trip to Lapland. Only thing is, unless you want to get eaten alive by mosquitos in the summer, you'll need to go in the spring or fall when it's damn cold and wet.
A bit OT, but I saw an elk the other day. I've never seen one close up in the wild before and this one was like 10 yards away. We were driving on a narrow side road in the woods and apparently the elk didn't hear us or couldn't tell us apart from the other cars on the bigger road a bit further. I got a bit startled too because we'd just rounded a bend and suddenly it was there. It was pretty cool.
Edit: forgot to mention one more thing. I was bored and channel surfing and came across Made on MTV. It was about a weird kid who wanted to become Homecoming King of his high school and he lived in Syracuse. It's a small world =P
What's a homecoming king/queen anyway and why is it called that?

Oh really? That's pretty wild. If you can link me to the picture I'd love to see it. Just got back from a trip with the outdoors club on Monday. The views were unbelievable. Clearest possible day with a brisk wind, but the sun warmed the rocks quite nicely. Our advisor even fell asleep on the summit.
Skiing. There's something I wish I did more of. Do you downhill ski or cross-country ski? Cross country can be awesome, but my fingers don't deal well with cold temperatures (unless I hold them above my heart in the winter months, they will turn purple, even indoors), so it hasn't been something I've been able to do a lot of. I hope that works out for you. Bring lots of bug spray! Black flies are intolerable here in May and June, but they sell really strong bug spray that keeps them off, and causes nerve damage if used too often. ^__^
You actually have wild elk? That must be an awesome sight. It's rare to catch a glimpse of a moose, but sometimes in the Adirondacks at dawn they start moving around. Only time I ever saw one was at about 5 am on the day of a hike; it was across the lake from us drinking, and you could see it through the mist rising off of the lake. They're such majestic creatures. Shame to think that they are overhunted. Elk, I think, are even bigger than moose?
Funny you should mention that! We voted for homecoming king today, actually. And I know of that episode of Made. I don't watch the show, but Made did open casting about a year ago in the area, and a kid from my school was a finalist to be on the show with the one you ended up seeing. Homecoming is the last home football game of the year, and the alumni come back and there's a small little parade and the hole town turns out for the game. The senior class elects a king and queen who march out on to the field on a little red carpet and get crowns and have their pictures taken. It's really old-fashioned but it's a fun thing to do.
For whatever it's worth, one of the rotary exchange students this year is from Finland. We also have a German, a Columbian, and a Venezuelan.

Signing off without saying "I'm leaving" or "goodbye" is getting really tiresome. Not only does it kill the convo, but it takes this mb at least 10-15 minutes before realizing that you've already left. You know how much time that wastes?
